I really don't think he's any better than the options STL already has. The one thing he does bring is an ability to eat innings and the others like Cooeny,Gonzales, etc don't have.

5/80?

From runner up for Price to Mike [expletive] Leake. Couldn't have happened to a nicer fanbase.

Can't wait to hear the spin on this one, you Birds on the Bat Cult fucks.

it's pretty fun that we needed the upgrades the least and took plan A (maybe plan A1 in the cards' case) from both the Mets and Cardinals and basically left their offseason plans in shambles.

5/80 doesn't buy stars anymore. Thats not even a bad deal for Leake, who'll likely outperform it by a bit anyway. If the Cards stay out of the 9 figure hitters, I'll be very happy.

He's decent and it's a small contract.

No need for spin.

Please. You can't possibly be happy with that contract. If Duncan was still there, you guys would already have two or three similarly skilled pitchers (even if reclamation) on 1 year make or break contracts. He was a huge advantage for you the last 20 or so years.

except duncan isn't there, the cards' starting pitching is pretty thin, leake is generally consistent, solid and healthy, and it's 2015, so those types of pitchers don't get paid $5 million a year any more.

Yeah, it's a decent contract. The Cards rotation is a big bag of injury risk, so signing a pitcher who is a good bet to give them ~200 IP was sort of a necessary move. It isn't sexy, and Leake doesn't really have any ceiling left, but it's stability.

I agree. IMO it shows how far they've fallen in the post Larussa/Luhnow Cards' era.

StL's prior rep was based on the supposition that they can turn present mediocrity into future competence.

That sure seemed to be true from 1996-2013. They only gave out five(!) big $ long term contracts for pitchers during that time. The Suppans, Lohse's and Bottenfelds of the world were lining up to play there for next to free.

It's where the pixy dust myth came from, and this Leake deal (IMO) signifies an end of era.

Wow.

That is a very bad post.

Leaks signing was solid. The Cardinals are waning but they are going to have 2 or 3 top 30 picks in draft this year so give their track record I would not say their era is over.
