Yeah, he's not getting Dez Bryant, Julio Jones or Demaryius Thomas money. But slightly below that 14M AAV is TY Hilton at 13M AAV.

Hilton got 5 years/65Mil. I think you may be able to get away with guaranteeing him about or around 20Mil. But basically guarantee his first year and part of his 2nd, and make it essentially a year to year deal after that.

Oh and the Bears will have the money to franchise half the roster, if they wanted. Probably going to have about 60Mil in cap room this offseason. I'd probably try to sign Jeffery and franchise Forte. There is a cap floor, and I don't think the Bears are going to go crazy signing a bunch of people. So, I'd overpay Forte for a year, cut his usage down to 50-60%, before letting him walk.

that money would be better allocated at almost literally any other position. they can find a way to spend it.

Assume you are referring to franchising Forte? I don't love it either. But the cap is at 143M this year. Probably closer to 150M next year. The Bears have less than 91 committed for next year, and can save another 11Mil by cutting guys like Bushrod, Houston and Rolle. And the offseason approach is probably going to be similar to last year of not going after the cream of the crop big money guys, and getting guys who fit roles while they continue to build thru the draft.

They have to be looking at at least another McPhee contract on defense as well as on offensive lineman.

2 McPhee contracts is still only spending 16Mil of that 60 toward the cap.

i don't see why they wouldn't sign top end defensive guys with that much cap space

i wish von miller weren't almost certain to get tagged

I think Pace has a stated goal to not spend heavily on top FAs. He wants to build through the draft.

yeah, we'll see about that.

eliminating that avenue of talent acquisition out of hand, especially with a mountain of cap space, would be short sighted and dumb. i hope he isn't those things. fangio needs his toys and it doesn't need to be through the draft alone.

fox will have more than his say in the matter and they weren't shy about getting guys in denver.

So, who will be the top FAs this offseason?

Von Miller and Muhammed Wilkerson on defense. I think there's a couple big WR set to hit the market on offense, can't remember who, but obviously wouldn't expect us in on that.

Denver us tight on cap. If they're going to franchise Miller they have two FA DEs I'd target.

If the Bears don't go big in FA they can at least sign front loaded deals that push all the guaranteed money up front and keeps them flexible going forward. If Pace picked up anything from Loomis though, cap responsibility won't be a virtue in the future (not saying it's a bad thing necessarily, they obviously got a SB ring).

Eta

Found this list. Seems fairly accurate but I could have sworn there was another big name WR or two out there on the level of Jeffrey.

Again you will notice quite a few DEN guys on there. If they do franchise Miller, the leftovers are strong and will be there for the taking as they are tight on space.*

*disclaimer -Denver could alleviate a lot by cutting Manning. They still wouldn't be able to keep all their FA, but it would help. I'm working under the assumption for now that he's there for now.

That would be awesome if we could see him in action this year.

I doubt it. They had to decide this by today. This just gives them three weeks without any practice limitations before the eventual IR.

Not that it matters much, but it seems nobody really knows how old White is. Some sites list his DOB as 6/25/92, others 6/25/93. I've found several forum threads debating it.

If it's the former, he'll be 24 before playing his first NFL snap.

The Bears have him listed as 22. As does ESPN. I'd go with that.

And you're assuming he won't play one this year, which I don't believe is a certainty anymore.

It has been reported that he is still not expected to play as the focus is on having him 100% for 2016 after multiple setbacks this year.

Yeah, and still not a certainty. The reporters didn't even think this was going to happen as of yesterday.

I wouldn't entirely trust any hunch the reporters have about these injury situations. They clearly haven't been able to get much of anything out of the team under this leadership. That's not to say they're wrong. I still think it's significantly more likely than not that he won't play. But the door is open IMO and "he'll be 24 before playing his first NFL snap" was far too declarative at this point.

David, today's move changed nothing about his chances of playing this year, if that's what you think.

Posted
it didn't change his chances. it changed my perception of them slightly.

that's silly. i didn't know (or think) he'd be practicing with the team before today. now i do. that can (and probably should) justifiably change what i think the chances are.
