Taking home field on the final day of the regular season would be sweet. I'm not too worried about it. But, if I were a Pirates fan contemplating facing Arrieta in Wrigley in a do-or-die game, after winning 97 games... it would just be torture.

When was the last time that the Cubs finished with a better record than any AL team?

1945. Cubs went 98-56. Best AL team was Detroit at 88-65.

Cubs starters have gone 24 straight innings without giving up a run and have allowed 1 ER in their last 45.1 IP.

The only run was in the 1st inning of Lester's last start against the Reds. That's freaking amazing

Someone talk me off my ledge, but I'm getting a feeling that the Cubs playing the way they are will beat Reds/Brewers, but lose to Pirates/Cardinals. Crazy talk?

From Sept 7 through Sept 20, the Cubs took 7 of 10 from the Pirates and Cards, winning 2 of 3 in Busch and 3 of 4 in PNC plus 2 of 3 from the Cards at Wrigley.

Against Pittsburgh on Wednesday, we've got the guy who has allowed 7 runs, 4 earned, in his last 88 1/3 innings (0.41 ERA). He's also got a 0.75 ERA (4 runs, 3 earned) in 36 innings against Pittsburgh this year. Cubs have gotten twice as many runs off Cole in 11 fewer innings.

If they play the Cardinals, Martinez is out, Lynn has a 3.69 ERA since July 10 (and the Cubs knocked him around twice in September) and Wacha has a 4.28 ERA since July 8 (7.88 in September, including 10 ER in 9 IP against the Cubs). Molina will be either out or hampered and Holliday hasn't done anything since he's come back. Plus they've got bad mojo by honoring a dude killed himself and his girlfriend because he decided to drive with a 0.287 BAC last offseason while the Cubs are honoring a baseball legend.

Pirates lost to the Reds yesterday and the Cardinals lost their last game to the Braves. So by the logic you're using to worry yourself, we should have no problem with them.

I think he's trying to say the Cubs aren't playing well enough to beat good teams. It still isn't right, but it does make sense I guess.
