Who would have thought that with 2 days left in the season the Cubs would be 30 games over .500 and 12 games up on a playoff spot?
Posted
And have the third best record in all of baseball, yet sit in third place in their own division and have to rely on a 1-game playoff to try to advance. :(

For crying out loud, please stop complaining about the one-game playoff. Of course everyone wishes they were a division winner. But - as has been mentioned numerous times - they wouldn't even have had the opportunity a few years back. Win the damn game and move on.

I heart you with all my heart.

This is so great, I'm going to enjoy every moment.

Here's an interesting scenario. There's a decent chance Reds/Pirates gets rained out today due to Joaquin. If the Cubs win today and tomorrow, the game is rained out today and the Reds win tomorrow. I assume the Pirates/Reds would have to play on Monday. Do the Pirates possibly go Cole on regular rest Monday?

Obviously, they should feel pretty good about beating the Reds with Happ, and they may not value a home game THAT much. But they could value the fact that Cole going Monday would put him in line to pitch Game 2 in the NLDS, which also keeps him there for a potential Game 5, if they make it that far. Would also put Liriano against the Cubs in the WC game, which I don't know if that's necessarily a bad thing for them. I don't think you take your best pitcher away from a 1-game elimination in any scenario, but it would certainly be interesting to have the Pirates playing on Monday.

I don't think home field is worth burning your best pitcher for.

Hence, why I was playing the "2 NLDS, including game 5 starts" angle.

Right and people have brought that up here. I just don't think you mess around with a 1 game playoff. You start your best pitcher and figure out the rest when you win. Even if Liriano has the Cubs number much of the time, it's just not worth the risk to start an inferior pitcher, especially because you burned the better pitcher to ensure home field for a 1 game playoff.

I also said that.

They should have negative hearts for people that have 2 chances to read an entire post and still don't. Sorry I skim things too often :)

I was honestly thinking of you when I posted that. I channeled my inner-gooney, some may say.

and this is coming from someone who used to want a 3-game playoff in lieu of the 1-game. But, i've done a complete heel turn on that one. the excitement is amazing. there's really no change in regards to "flukeiness" between 1-3 games. And you match up your stud starters on both teams and just battle till one kills the other. it's pretty amazing, actually.

that being said, i will be equal parts excited and nervous. maybe not nervous because I don't have confidence the cubs can win. just nervous because every moment can be monumental. which, is part of the reason it's so amazing. i'm going to be hanging on every single pitch. I'll probably be like 6 inches away from my TV.

Basic cable is included in my HOA andI stream way too much stuff to really care about the premium channels. But, I'm going to be a little bit pissed that I'm not going to be watching this one in HD #firstworldprobs

It's one of those things where you dream for the better part of a decade for a game like this, and then when the game is going on and your stomach is in knots you wish it was some boring game in July. But you really don't believe that, it just feels like it at the time.

and another thing (apparently i'm a chatty cathy today so I'll just keep talking to myself), I'm going to tell everyone I see on Wednesday all about the Cubs and the game that night and about Jake and how sexy he is and how my beard sucks compared to his, etc. My advisee's probably won't care but most of them like me so they'll probably humor me. I've been keeping an updated "Cubs record" on my whiteboard on my office door so everyone in the office already knows about the game.

the guy that sent me this email after GAME ONE?

Hello Daniel, After all the optimism, the Cubs looked like the same old the bumbling, stumbling and forever dumbling team. Joe Madden’s spring training frustration over defensive lapses was on full display last night … Solar and Castro most glaringly. I think it was Shilling (maybe Kruk) that said Addison Russell was be a defensive improvement at SS, and Castro will be gone … one way or another.

I also had no idea that John Lester could not throw the baseball to any bases.

Just like the ballpark and bleachers, the team is still a work in progress … as we all know.

Based on what Madden has said and what I saw last night, I’ve completely lowered my expectation for this year.

Your thoughts?

Jim

I forwarded it to his boss (who I'm really close with because he was previously the undergrad coordinator of my school) and we still joke around and drop a "man, quit DUMBLING!" reference every now and then. and lol at him picking Shilling (sic) or Kruk to quote. he's a nice guy and all, and I was nice enough in my response but i basically said "it's a long year and they have a lot of young talent". I also emailed him after Jake pitched in game 2 (a W, of course) and I said that Jake was the "real deal". I'm guessing he's enjoying the year but he works in the building beside mine and I haven't talked to him in months. I guess if I really wanted to be a nice guy I could email him and ask him.

Yeah, you're right. I'm going to forward it to him on Monday or Tuesday before the WC game to gather his thoughts. If there is anything noteworthy I'll report back for you all.
