this isn't a draft i care about picking atop all that much; i think similar talent shows up at 15-20 as does top-3

Same could be said for baseball too. It's not about the talent up there, it's that you don't have to worry about another team stealing the guy you want.

that's my point, though; i'm no NFL scout, but i don't see much if any difference between Ronnie Stanley (top-5) & Jack Conklin (20-25) / Nkemdiche (top-3) & DeForest Buckner (top-15) / Treadwell & Ramsey...

I understand that. I haven't heard much about the difference either. Just pointing out that picking early is about getting the best talent, not targeting one guy and hoping nobody else takes him first.

As for the Bears, it's looking like they're going to get hosed on the top shelf QB talent this year. Aside from Cook (meh) and Goff who both don't really look like surefire talents at QB, they could likely just pick the best defensive player available.

I don't understand this. I don't know if you're saying there's no top shelf talent or if they won't be bad enough to pick one of the top guys. I don't think either are true. Sure, if you want to call guys like Luck, Peyton, Eli, Rivers top shelf talent...there's none of those guys, but there's hardly ever any of those guys. Bears could be waiting forever if that's what they're looking for. But Goff or Cook could be fine NFL QBs. Cook reminds me of a Matt Ryan type, maybe poor man's version but definitely a guy that can start early and be slightly more than a game manager in the NFL at worst. Goff reminds me of a Derek Carr type. Lot of talent, hard to get a feel on with his college offense, but definitely worth a shot at seeing if he can be someone to build around.

I also don't know that the Bears take defense 1st. I would definitely lean toward getting an elite OT with the 1st round pick (if you don't love the QBs). But a guy like Jalen Ramsey is really intriguing on D. Playing CB this year, which I don't love him there but he's played S in the past and he's a physical prototype DB. Feel like you can play him anywhere in the back there and build around him.

Yea if I don't feel strongly about the QBs I can definitely get on board with a OT. Let's lock down 3/5 of our line for the next 5 years.

Tunsil and Johnstone. move Long back to RG. interested to see what Grasu has, as well. maybe see if Kessler falls and snake him, too.

Again, the Bears can win with Cutler, they can absolutely win, they've done it before. he's signed long-term. protect him, get his weapons healthy, load up on defensive speed on day 3. they could turn it around quick, i don't think long rebuilds happen in football, anyway. shelf-lives are just too short. saying this is a 3-5 year rebuild is just stupid. football rebuilds aren't baseball rebuilds, if you get guys who can contribute right away, you can turn it around sooner than later-especially if you have a serviceable QB.

They'll have some decent cash to burn too. Another McPhee type talent in the front 7 could go a long way to turning around the D.

is Bushrod signed beyond the season? If so, what would the savings be to cut him?

I wanna say something like $4m in dead space. So if you ate it all up front you'll save just a couple million. Or spread it out at a couple million for two years.

yes he signed a 5 year deal which has 2 years left and next year his cap hit would be about 8.5m and they could save half of that if they cut him.

There's a big difference in talent from top 5 to 15-20 in every draft ever. Ronnie Stanley has top 5 OT in football potential, much higher upside than Conklin. Nkemdiche has as much talent as any interior DL has had since Suh. Buckner (who I like a ton) is really good too, but not in that same class.

Here's the most liklely 2016 cap casualties:

Player (dead cap) (savings)

Bushrod (4.4) (4.3)

Houston (2.97) (4.02)

Young (.667) (2.5)

Gould (1.2) (2.9)

Rolle (0) (3.0)

Slausson has a pretty decent cap savings too but I don't see him as likely as long as his play stays as is. We do need to think about his eventual replacement, but maybe that's a developmemtal guy for '17. Bennet also has decent cap savings, but he'd be more likely to be traded if they decide they want to move on as he should maintain decent value.

So we get to see what we have in Leno?

Don't get Jay killed (if he plays)! If Claussen plays... Play Fabuluje!

Battle of 2nd year players. Charles Leno vs. Khalil Mack. Yeah, it'll probably be as bad as that looks on paper.

Conklin can easily be argued is a better player currently, and i put a lot of stock into that

i just don't know about mythical upside; Clowney had a bunch of gushing hyperbole and JJ Watt was thought of as a high-floor solid performer, wasn't he? what does that matter? football seems more about winning your individual battles on every down for most of these players and you don't get much perspective on that with physical measurements

it's like Henry Anderson slipping to day 2 (or 3 was it?) because he doesn't look the part, or Aaron Donald not being ideal because you want DTs taller...these guys KILLED it in college- i don't know if these points are germane to the discussion, but i guess that's why i'm agnostic to there being a big talent gap anywhere in the top half of the 1st round this year

Well let's not put too much stock in September mock drafts either. If he's as talented as Stanley he'll be a top 10 pick also.

I know the point you're trying to make but keep in mind you are cherry picking the best success stories of those later picks. I mean, Kyle Fuller is another high floor type but he has struggled massively.

I hope so. I'm going to the game today. Can't handle another Claussen game in person (was at last years Lions game).

Sounds like Jeffrey is out though.
