I think it's probably fairly common for people who are known as "always happy" or whatever to struggle with the fact they aren't and can't always be happy. I have a friend with a similar personality. Everyone loved being around him because he always smiled and was upbeat. Recently he's become very open about the fact that he's actually depressed much of the time, but he felt he had to live up to that expectation others had of him.

 

Regardless, it's sad to think of Ernie like that, especially in his final days. thanks for sharing the article.

I wish I could have had the kind of relationship that the author had with him so that I could spend time with him (lunch, listening to stories, etc.) those last few years.
