Is Sunday still going to be a pen day? If we win tomorrow and the Cards lose at least one of their two games tomorrow, I am hoping they do it on the doubleheader in Pittsburgh instead.

I assume the two options are pen day vs. Philly and Hammel on Tuesday or vice versa?

I'd much rather go pen day vs. Philly. I think it's way more likely we win a pen day against Philly than against Pittsburgh.

Pen day v. Philly means you need a pen day again on Saturday against St. Louis. Pen day on Tuesday means you don't need the pen day again.

Yes, but if you go with a pen day Sunday you also need a pen day Saturday vs the Cards. I'd also much prefer the pen day on Tuesday.

1 game behind the Royals...but win your division!!! Blah blah blah!

Yeah, I really hope baseball switches to leaguewide seeding at some point. Not saying the best teams should automatically win the World Series, but the winningest clubs should at least have the opportunity to play five playoffs games. The NL will have one 90-95 win team eliminated in a crapshoot play-in game, and that's unacceptable.

Makes sense. I guess the logic to Madden/the FO would be we're more likely to catch Pittsburgh so winning the H2H against them is more important. The odds of beating Philly don't change much and you increase your odds of beating Pittsburgh but decrease your odds of beating St. Louis.

It is entirely acceptable.

David Kaplan doesn't know what a tailor is.

I [expletive] love this team.

his suits are brutal

easier to beat st louis with the pen than pittsburgh imo

Schwarber's first home run was smoked. I think I like watching him dong more than anyone else on the team. When he really gets into one, it sounds so loud off the bat. Plus, he likes pimping them.

guys i just realized that the 2004 team also had two double headers in like the 3 weeks or so

mind you i'm not worried about missing the playoffs. i'm worried about it affecting other good stuff that could happen. stupid double headers.

then again i'll just say that collapse started on the crazy oswalt game. now i feel better.

The 2004 Cubs were 76-64 at this point and not even in the wild card lead.

It's weird how I still automatically think back on that team as being SO dominant until the collapse. That stupid collapse has me remembering like they were sure things and somehow even better than this team, or the 2008 one, which is just stupid nuts.

right

and they were 71-56 when the oswalt game i mentioned happened. the comparison to 2004 was more of a joke anyway. i think it was pretty obvious in my post that i wasn't worried about this team suffering anything resembling a similar fate.

the point is that double headers suck and do bad things and two of them are even worse so hopefully we can overcome any semblance of hangover effect because we need to win a lot (and i mean a lot) to do the things i still want us (them - if you're one of those people) to do.

it was more like...we just got nomar and our schedule looks really easy down the stretch.

what i didn't remember, now looking at BR, is that we were still in the division race in early july. in my mind's eye, the cardinals ran away with it wire to wire, which is definitely not true.

Fangraphs playoff odds now at 100.0%

haha awesome

Also, the last time the Cubs were this close to the Cardinals was June 11.

could conceivably be 4.5 games out by the time we hit the pillow tonight, so that'd be fun

Man it would be so awesome to be within 5 games when we play them next weekend because I think we will sweep them
