chris heston is a 27 y/o 12th rounder rookie? ugh

I don't get why you guys are so caught up in things like this. Some players/pitchers aren't championed in the minors and can develop into really good players in the majors. It happens quite often actually.

Because it never seems to happen for us. Every once in a while we see some irrelevant dude like Donnie Murphy play out of his mind for a few months, but almost never do our marginal players develop legit, solid careers, which is what consistently happens in St. Louis.

Yes, I think this is what it is.

Now I'm going to waste time trying to figure out the last time a generally untouted guy turned into a legitimate thing for the Cubs for more than a month or so.

ETA: I guess you could pretty easily make the case Arrieta would qualify, actually.

Theriot and Hendricks come to mind. The biggest problem is that the Cubs haven't developed many of their own players over the years.

He was a pretty well regarded prospect almost instantly upon playing in the states though.

The reason you see frustration at guys like Heston is that baseball is a game of failure. Every team loses 50, probably 60 games, every hitter makes a majority of outs, etc. That extends to player development, where the assumption is failure or underperformance. When you see a team you hope does poorly buck that trend, and do it consistently(Heston, Crawford, and Duffy for the Giants, a list too long to mention for the Cardinals), it's aggravating. Especially when you have far fewer or no similar successes with your own team to celebrate.

Jake Arietta went from god awful to one of the top 5-10 pitchers in baseball.

Arrieta was always considered a top prospect with potential ace stuff. Same thing could be said for Jacob Turner but that one isn't working out obviously. Just luck of the draw really.

5th round draft pick and the #4 prospect for Baltimore two years in a row in what was, at the time, a really good farm system. He just really figured it out with the Cubs, is all. Sure, very few probably thought he'd be this good, but he was never unknown or devoid of talent.

What the Giants do so well is find position guys like Panik who will never profile as a great player but in this case have elite contact skills. They'll never be sexy prospects but they do at least one non sexy thing incredibly well. Heston is the same but it's the profile of a sinker baller that will never post huge strikeout numbers or blow you away with velocity but has substantial heavy sink and a good slider. It will never jump out at scouts but the skills are solid. I just hope he has one of his games where he leaves pitches up because he gets shelled when he does.

As both a Giants and Cubs fan, I must say I hope the Cubs sweep this series. Right now it's Adv. Cubs... Don't have to face Bumgarner, Vogelsong tomorrow, Buster is sitting out tonight, and Panik is on the DL. People around here are going nuts about the Duffy vs. Bryant race for best rookie. Should be fun to watch.
