I suggested him at 4/64 a week ago or so, but he's losing velo and has tired out over the 2nd half. I'm thinking I was very high on that number.

maybe I'm missing something, but I feel good about the starting pitching both now and moving forward.

They have elite talent in Arrieta and Lester. Hendricks and Hamel sport 3.33 and 3.53 xFIPs respectively, good for 18th and 24th among qualifiers (ahead of Wach, Lynn and Lackey). Depth is there in the form of Wood, Cahill, Carl's Jr., Johnson and Underwood. I feel if you replace Hammel's production next year or slightly improve you're doing really well.

What am I missing?

The general nature of pitchers.

also of note:

Jason Heyward is 11th in hitter WAR (5.8), and Jorge Soler is sadly replacement level

I'd like to build the depth through the minor league system so you can shuffle guys back and forth as needed, but that list of 9 names has 5 who cannot be counted on to start games next year so it's not really depth.

Yep. I'm still stuck on trying to trade Castro to LA for Cotton and De Leon. Do that plus acquiring a front-line pitcher and starting pitching is pretty set. Then sign Heyward and win a whole bunch of games.

Wood is OK, but they don't seem to like him as a starter. Cahill is a flash in the pan and a reliever. Edwards is a reliever. Johnson kinda sucks. Duane Underwood was last seen striking out 5.9 per 9 in A+.

what exactly do you expect 6th, 7th, and 8th starters to be?

Actual starters would be nice.

i'm not sure what exactly qualifies as a 6th/7th/8th starter that isn't what travis wood is or essentially a reliever like those other guys you mentioned but ok

You should probably quit trying on that one. 1) They've got Seager at SS 2) They've got Hernandez, Perlaza, and want Kendrick back at 2B 3) They wouldn't include DeLeon for Hamels when going after him.

Wood counts if they want to use him that way.

They look like actually good prospects with options or swingmen, usually. And it wouldn't kill them to enter ST with six legitimate rotation guys on the assumption that not all six will be healthy at all times.

What was our initial depth heading into this year? Lester, Arrieta, Hammel, Hendricks, Wood, then what?

Was it Wada, Turner, Doubront, Beeler?

Wada and Turner were expected to be on that list.

Is Wood going to get a contract?

Seager is an awful shortstop, by stats and scouting. He's going to be moving to 3B sooner as opposed to later.

But if that trade isn't the one that will happen, then I'd like to find something similar with a team that has depth in the upper levels.

I asked that in Transactions. No idea, it's a close call.

They like him there, believe it or not.

Can't believe I forgot Edwin.

How is that better than the nine I listed?

Cahill has been a starter until this year. He's a perfectly reasonable number 6 or 7. If you don't think Edwards can start then sign the always available aging veteran #5 in addition to the "replace Hammel's production" guy.

Jackson and Turner all had more success in starting roles than the guys you listed.

Regardless, though, look where that level of depth ended this year.

Cahill is NOT a perfectly fine 6th SP. His stuff is much better out of the pen.(5MPH) Hes a pen guy now.

I guess the difference is that I feel very good with where that depth ended up this year. It ended with Wood in the bullpen and Edwin swapped out for a cheap deadline pickup. And 4 solid to great starters.
