utley was v good as recently as last year and his (terrible) numbers this year are probably representative of at least some bad luck, but he's basically stopped hitting the ball hard and his line drives are way down. as long as you make sure his option doesn't vest, he'd be fine as a vetty vet bench guy if you think herrera's lousy hitting is bringing the team down but utley's lousy hitting will inspire us to success, i guess.

that said, if we are as cash-strapped as davell says, we'd better not spend a dime on this fool. make tom put the $5MM in a 4-month cd and make it rain with .02% interest.

what if they worked something out to take utley and give them castro + cash considerations?

No one will pay Utley's contract at this point. Personally, I don't see a fit. I guess the vetty vet thing, but he'd have to but into becoming a PH basically.

And no, I'm not even remotely dumping Starlin for him.

think he was playing on an injury too

I would take Utley for more disposable Rule 5 eligibles and prorated league minimum. I know that a lot of people scoff at the idea of a experience alone bringing value to the playoffs or a playoff chase, but then again, a lot of people value it. So with the roster expansion around the corner, I'd give him a spot, even if it means that our September roster features 24 relievers instead of 25.

But the idea of salary dumping Castro is nothing short of ludicrous.

I kinda like the idea, too. As long as all it takes is something like Rivero, LaStella or Szczur at most.

The cost would be minimal and would essentially be replacing Herrera on the bench. I'm fine with it.

Aren't they likely going to replace with Herrera with Castro when Baez comes up?

Going after Utley now seems to speak that maybe they're not bring up Baez until September.

Herrera is reliably replacement level. I'm not sure I like the risk of Utley's continued turdiness just for the reward of a slightly better bench bat.

Don't think they are going to outright bench Castro when Baez comes up, Castro will still be starting more than Herrera has. I'm guessing we'll see equal playing time between Baez/Castro/Russell when Javy comes up between 2B/SS/3B (Bryant to the OF a little more).

Utley was playing on an injury, apparently, and is feeling much better. (I swear I saw that somewhere but I'm not going to try to find where because I look at way too much baseball internet stuff). He was great last year. Worth a dice roll.

I think I'd have more faith in him turning it around this year than Castro.

Either way, they're bringing up a MI and presumably Herrera would be the one to get the boot. Utley doesn't have a spot in that mix if they're sticking to their roster design.

There's the chance that Utley could pull an Edmonds, but unless you've already gotten rid of a middle infielder, it seems like an odd gamble to take with him instead of Baez or Castro. La Stella, presuming he doesn't contract leprosy during his rehab assignment, will also be a depth option soon too.

I think, in the scenario where we'd get Utley, you bench Castro and see how he does while Javy gets a month to continue to work on things and get back into it. Not like he's Bryant/Schwarbering the league to the point where he's demanding a call up right now.

I just assume something like this is going to happen to LaStella as soon as he takes a hard swing.

I find the music added to this clip to be hilarious.

Posey's disinterested glance back made me lose it.
