2nd WC Spot at ASB, Who do you start in the 1 game playoff?

As much as I complain overall I am very happy about the position the Cubs are in right now.

Question for you guys, who do you start in the one game playoff if the season was over today?

My Pick (obvious i think) Arrieta --

But i think the Cubs/Maddon/Theo would roll with Lester due to his "History/Track Record in postseason, and Salary"

What do you think!?

If we've learned anything from Maddon over the first 3 months this year is that he is completely unafraid to go away from conventional thinking and locking people into statuses like 'closer' or 'ace' etc. Salary and past performance will play very little into the decision making.

If Arrieta is the best guy he will absolutely start the WC game.

what in the ever loving effer makes you think they would determine the starter based on salary?

Lester is the big signing, the guy who is supposed to be the best guy in the rotation, Theo's winner from Boston.. I didnt bold the word salary...

I said "History/Track Record in postseason, and Salary"

Some people have selective hearing which can be mistaken for not hearing the context or missing part of the conversation..

But selective reading? lol c'mon!

everyone knows the cubs will lose the WC game in pittsburgh with cole beating lester 8-1. pirates steal 11 bases. the sooner everyone just accepts this as inevitable, the easier it will be to swallow when it happens.

Thats my point I think Arrieta is teh guy, but the management will go with Lester.

There's only 3 reasons I could see them going with Lester instead:

He pitches out of his mind the rest of the season and is actually better than Arrieta.

Arrieta is injured.

Arrieta pitches like ass the rest of the season.

Otherwise, if things continue mostly unchanged then there's zero chance they don't go with Arrieta. Why would they have to go with Lester because of his salary? What's he going to do, refuse to play if he doesn't get the start?

You are forgetting the biggest reason:

If Arrieta has to pitch in the final series in an effort to clinch a spot in the postseason, and is therefore unavailable for that one game playoff.

Lester has the winning experience in the post season and is the big FA for 2015 season.

Salary set aside, I can see them choosing Lester based on his history alone.

We will see in a couple months!!!!!

Please NOTE i want to see Jake in that spot!!

Odds are pretty good they will not be able to choose from any starter they like. If they do have the luxury of choosing between Arrieta and Lester, I think it has to be Arrieta at this point.

It also could be based on matchups. If the team the Cubs are playing suck against left-handers, well, then you probably go with Lester.

Arrieta is the choice right now if that is not a factor. But the choice might be Lester by then. Or Cole Hamels. I have a good feeling the answer will be obvious when that time (hopefully) comes.

That wasn't at all the point of the post, but yes, I agree.

Has anyone considered that it might come down to a simple issue of rest? If it's close to a toss-up at the end of the year, they might just go with the fresher arm.

Yes, a few people have brought up the idea that it's not simply a choice you can make based on your preferred pitcher. Rest and availability will probably be the deciding factors.

It's going to depend on how far ahead the Cubs would theoretically be in the race for the second wild card as you can likely say the WC1 will be rested and that the Cardinals and Pirates would throw out Wacha and Cole, respectively.

Here are the following starters since inception of the 1 gam wild card

2014

Edison Volquez vs. Bumgarner

Lester vs. Shields

2013

Alex Cobb vs. Danny Salazar

Liriano vs. Cueto

2012

Joe Saunders vs. Yu Darvish

Lohse vs. Medlen
