The big question is now how long we wait until Baez is recalled.

Where does he play can they really bench castro the rest of the season?

For the millionth time, YES.

No pressure, Javy, you just have to come up and quickly show why we didn't want to trade you or Cubs Twitter will turn on you but good

So you guys are mad we didn't let Preller cherry pick our system cause his teams "still in contention"

oooooooook got it

cherry pick?

God you are ridiculous

They had plenty of teams to trade with and chose not to.

I get being disappointed, but again, you have no idea what the talks were like. There might have been demands that we pick up a bad contract. There might have been requests for players off our Major League roster. We just don't know. I can't be mad without knowing what they actually turned down. But, sure, I'm disappointed nothing worked out. But that's the breaks.

I know Junior Lake isn't great and will probably never start for us, but he's better than Chris Denorfia and Tommy Hunter does nothing for me.

WTF??! no.

Denorfia is garbage. He BABIP-monstered himself a nice start to the season similar to Lake last year. I'd rather have Lake as the 4th OF at this point. Still probably fair value for Hunter.

I like the Hunter trade. He averages 96.1 mph and does throw a curve ~25% of the time so he's not necessarily Motte 2.0. Maybe Bosio can get some more K's out of him.

The Haren/rotation stuff on the other hand, ugh. Was definitely hoping for more.

Do get a decent reliever for a spare part and solidify the 5th spot in the rotation for a couple guys we might've lost in the Rule 5 draft anyway. Certainly not sexy moves and a bummer we didn't do anything big but hard to be too disappointed. Got some help without really giving up anything.

Yeah, not ideal, but this could still work out.

I don't know, I'm finding the disappointment pretty easy right now.

you have literally no clue what they were asking for in what deals. and teams usually cherry pick players in trades. thats how they work.

It was clear they wanted Baez.

what does this mean? i'm sure they did. he's valuable. we don't even know which of their players the cubs wanted, let alone what they were asking for in return.

also, the padres weren't the only team selling. there have been lots of really good players traded. not all of them would have taken baez. missing out on hamels looks especially bad now.

I will say, I am bummed they didn't go out and get like a Venable type. I think that would have really helped.

You dont know what the trades were either. Theo pretty much inferred anything of good value was going to have to include Baez and they didnt want to trade him.

Whoa, look at Mr. "Don't say anything that's not nice to posters or they'll all leave and that would be terrible!" lashing out.

Couldn't we still get a guy of that caliber over waivers?

It's certainly disappointing, but it's worth noting that no one else got the guys (Ross, Carrasco) the Cubs were targeting, either. The prices were apparently too rich for anyone's blood. And I'm not going to fault them for focusing on pitchers with years of control left.

I'd be curious to see what the Rangers were asking for Gallardo, though.

I wouldn't mind Venable or someone similar, but they have to play somewhere. With Fowler hitting, Soler not in a super funk and needing ABs, the only option is to play that acquisition over Coghlan, which isn't exactly a point of need. Plus with Schwarber clearly considered a LF option and Denorfia having a good year there's depth around right now.

Family lives in SD, and the buzz there is that rival GMs (who already disliked Preller) are seriously feeling he jerked them around and that his antics spoiled a lot of potential deals elsewhere. Supposedly didn't contact anybody on most of his discussed trades - just left them hanging out to dry - and basically has no professionalism at all.

Hunter and Haren are certainly underwhelming. But we dodged a bullet with Javy. Theo was basically true to what he's been saying all along. And I could easily see him doing something in a waiver deal.

Now - get Baez up and get Russell to SS where he belongs. Just no reason to wait now.

Preller sounds like he gets high on the smell of his own farts but why should he or any GM have to inform other GMs of his intentions for the sake of professionalism.

The more I look at the SD/Preller situation, the less I understand and actually think he's delusional enough to think they can make the playoffs. He's got expiring contracts for guys like Kennedy and Venable and just holds onto them in a season like this? That's just wasteful and foolish. He had an opportunity to turn them into assets (even minor ones) and instead just took nothing. I honestly don't get it.
