How does his bat play?

He has a .298 career OPS.

Same, on both counts.

Worthy gamble though.

Apparently his contract had a stipulation that he had to be added to the Pirates 25 man roster by a certain date or get dealt/released

What advantages does this Clayton Richard have over say a Dallas Beeler, which we could also afford?

Indiana Mr. Football and Mr. Baseball. Warmed the bench at Michigan as a QB behind Chad Henne.

So leadership and he's probably better than the average baseball player in a bench-clearing brawl.

All the Marlins best bats are lefties, so this is a better matchup for this specific game.

But Clayton Richard is terrible.

Probably. But he was killin it in AAA so far this year. K rate is low, but still good numbers. He's better than Roach (all that matters) and I don't see how that's arguable at all.

But when all of the options are terrible, you might as well go with the terrible option that matches up best.

Roach and Richard have eerily similar AAA lines this year.

If they're both terrible I'll take the terrible lefty, especially against Miami

In all seriousness, why are we not just going with Jackson or Wood? Start by piggybacking them. How much worse can either of them be than a revolving door of whomever they see first.

When our bullpen was a mess, it made sense to keep Jackson there. But now, we have 5 right handed relievers who are better at right handed relieving than he, as well as Edwards, who seems like he's ready to join, and Soriano, who's supposedly out there somewhere. Jackson's baskcally there for storage. And as long as he is, we may as well use him to do what he's being paid $13MM to do (and another 13MM next year.) If he can't do it any better than the AAAA dregs, you just suck it up and take that $20MM bath.
