I almost refuse to believe this is possible. Only 2 series sweeps in the last 100 years? Seriously? They've been bad, but that bad?

Beating the same team at least 5-0 in a single season is pretty tough, plus they're seeing most of those teams at least 6 games.

Total gut instinct-move, but I kinda want to keep Starlin up there instead of Fowler.

Madness, I know.

I vote Coghlan

I'd keep Coghlan 4th.

Castro

Rizzo

Bryant

Coghlan

Soler

Montero

Fowler

Pitcher

Russell

I'd rather have the guy with a .350 OBP in there over the one with a .296 but that's just me.

I have to think big slick missed the "season" series part

If ur changing the lineup you can move Russell. Not a law he has to hit 9th.

I know. I think it's the place for him while he continues to develop.

Again, that whole lineup was just a goofy gut-instinct idea. I doubt it would be something they stick with.

It really wasn't based on any kind of logic beyond sorcery and madness.

Russell had a tough June and now has a .670 OPS overall. They're not putting him there because he sucks, but he shouldn't necessarily be hitting higher, either.

Playing teams fewer than 12+ times a year is a relatively recent thing.

Streakiest team of all time?

aren't you the guy who was complaining about them going .500 for 3 weeks or something and not having any long streaks like 2 weeks ago?

You know this conversation started about Castro moving up? And he's been better than Fowler. The reasoning for him hitting 9th is stupid and the refusal to hit him anywhere else is even dumber.

That was mostly a joke. They should keep hitting him 5th or 6th.

And he's been better than Fowler.

Ehhhhhhhhhh. Most of his value over Fowler comes from his defense; they've both been pretty underwhelming or streaky offensively.

Isn't the reasoning that the 9th spot effectively acts as the leadoff spot once they get past the 1st inning?

I'd be fine moving him up in the lineup to try and get him some more AB from a developmental standpoint, but in terms of production it's not like it's moving up a guy who is currently lighting it up at the plate.

Yep, that was me.

You know who is effectively the leadoff man in a normal lineup? The actual person chosen to hit leadoff in the first place. And what makes him a good effective leadoff man that wouldn't make him a good 6th or 7th hitter? Not like he's getting on base a ton.

maybe "normal" lineups are (slightly) wrong

i don't think it really matters all that much, but i think batting the pitcher 8th and a decent hitter 9th is probably right.

you get a combination of getting bryant and rizzo more at bats over the course of the season, while getting one more good hitter closer up before them for most of their plate appearances

You should take a look at this season's Nationals if you want to talk about streaks.

Well, once you get past that first inning the dynamic basically shifts and it essentially comes down to who can you have on base before your best hitters. Like David said, I'm a fan of Rizzo and Bryant at2-3 because it gets them more AB's, and having a decent hitter at #9 ideally means more people on base for them. Russell, unfortunately, has been in a pretty long adjustment period funk, but once he ultimately settles in I think he'd be an excellent candidate to hit #1 to get even more AB's, because he'll hopefully be that valuable. Right now he's not that guy, and quite frankly, neither is Fowler. If we really want them to put the best OBP hitter who isn't Rizzo or Bryant in that spot, it's Coghlan.
