Name the last Cubs closer who you felt was lights out getting the last 3 outs. I can't say I have the stats, but my last really fond memory of a closer would have been Rod Beck. I thought he was solid, but I was also like 9.

Marmol was utterly ridonkulous in 2007 and 2008. It was glorious to watch.

Could be a huge game for Castro. Seems like could be a big confidence booster for him.

Lmao beck was like the most stress inducing closer ever. Either him or Sweaty Joe

I remember Marmol being lights out as a setup man, but only decent at best as closer.

He's been getting big hits like that all season; it sadly hasn't done much to his game otherwise.

Marmol in 2010. Walked a lot of guys, but it was almost a guarantee he'd K at least 2 guys and get out of whatever jam he'd put himself in.

That right; I forgot he wasn't closing then. Those were the days of Wood.

Who else has been there since 98? Joe Blow, Gregg, Gordon, Remlinger for a bit, Marmol, was Fassero?, Hawkins

yeah no kidding

marmol in 07-08 was as good as i ever felt about a reliever, even though they smartly used him in higher leverage spots rather than as a closer

he was almost a 3 win player in 2010, which is damn absurd for a relief pitcher

Just looked up becks 98 stats.. Pitched 80 innings as a closer.. 1.32 WHIP. Somehow finished 18th in mvp voting.

If you ever get a chance, look at that Cubs roster in 1998. How they snuck into the playoffs is beyond me.. Must have been Jeff Blauser.

When your 3,4,5 is Sosa, Grace and Oh Henry Rodriguez - great things happen. Cubs greats Sandy Martinez, Brant Brown and Scott Servais were great off the bench. I did love Glen Allen Hill and Gary Gaetti though.

Sosa was an absolute monster and Mickey Morandini played out of his mind

Wood obviously was a beast that year and iirc mark clark was pretty good

When you have a guy hitting like a god in Sosa it goes a long way. A couple other good hitters and then a bunch of OK guys. That team was a lot of fun.
