He probably could have hidden his weaknesses by inheriting a better ballclub.

Ned Yost won the AL last year. Awful managers can persevere with talented teams.

go screw andrew

MacPhail said he was "quizzed pretty carefully" about sabermetrics during the hiring process that spanned months.

"In Chicago, I was the president and CEO and I had a GM who I loved that wasn't very saber-friendly, but I made him hire two kids to help him with that," MacPhail said. "We used to use it in Minnesota, for God's sakes. We don't really advertise it because why should we tell them? They are our opponents.

"I can assure you as you already probably know that sabermetrics is something of intense interest of the ownership."

you were his boss, you could have pushed him, or you could have chosen not to gift him an extension on your way out the door.

Who were the "2 kids?" Even that Wasserstrom goof was post-MacPhail IIRC.

Wasserstrom predated the MacPhail era and he went from the guy who distributed media guides to the "information analyst" gig while Andy was still there (circa 2003). They probably hired a data entry guy for him.

Can anyone explain to me why the Cubs failed during the MacPhail era? Was it due to MacPhail's leadership, lack of spending by Tribune Co or combo of both? I was too young to pay enough attention to these things back then.

Essentially, he ignored the analytical tools other teams used. The money was there. The payroll increased steadily throughout the era and the Cubs climbed from the middle of the NL to the top. They invested in the farm system but they foolishly tried to copy the Braves by building with pitching and while that did eventually work, it lasted about 1.5 years because pitchers are pitchers.

They were miserable acquirers of hitters. They could not draft and develop them, and constantly had to go out to the market to buy them which was not cost effective. They lucked out with Sosa who covered for a lot of weaknesses but they hurt by Hendry's old school ways, including hiring a potentially more old school coach when the team should have been at their best.

http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/phillies/20150728_Ryne_Sandberg_quit_on_Phillies__plain_and_simple.html

THE NARRATIVE surrounding Ryne Sandberg since his resignation as Phillies manager a month ago seems to lack the appropriate outrage.

After all, how could a man walk away from a once-in-a-lifetime job?

Perhaps there was an underlying family issue. Perhaps Sandberg has a personality disorder, or some ingrained shortcoming, that made the daily grind of major league leadership too much to bear.

The Phillies visited the Cubs this weekend, the organization with which Sandberg became a Hall of Fame second baseman . . . and the organization that, after four years of watching him do splendid work in the minors, refused to give him a chance at managing in the major leagues. Perhaps a trip to Chicago would unearth a circumstance that would make Sandberg's decision appear less bizarre. Decency dictated a chance for the story to unfold further.

Apparently, there is no Rest of the Story.

Sandberg just quit.

Quitting, in baseball, is unforgivable.

This narrative continues to drive me insane.
