A Happ-Dewees-Jimenez OF would certainly be something to pay attention to every night once Eugene starts

Kevonte Mitchell will be in that outfield too and he's a top 30 prospect in the Cubs system.

More I think about it, more I think one of Happ/Dewees, if not both, get pushed to South Bend sooner than later if they show any of the offensive polish the Cubs bet on. Mitchell can handle CF in the low minors, or perhaps they push Happ to play 2nd next to Torres at South Bend. Either way, you want your most intriguing guys getting AB's, and Mitchell/Jimenez are intriguing, and off the top, 2nd base at Eugene should be ... Frandy de la Rosa?

what if they signed Eddy Martinez too!?

um ... I doubt Martinez, if signed, would suddenly jump to America and jump to short-season this year. I'd be rather surprised, if the Cubs signed him, if he came over before fall instructs.

Yeah, and Frandy was a big bonus guy who looked relatively good down in extended spring training. I assume Happ will go to Eugene for a few weeks just to get his feet wet and then go to South Bend. Obviously all depends on when these guys sign.

I might like Dewees more than Happ. If Happ can man 2nd, then he's the better prospect. But I think I like Dewees' bat a bit more.

if these guys can get on base they look to be good table setters in the future, even if most of the power is gap doubles.

Why not? He's 20 years old. Soler came straight to the states at the same age and he even skipped short season (after a brief warm up in Mesa) going straight to Low-A.

If it requires 4+ to keep Fowler, my guess is they move on from him. Denard Span would make some sense, and I'd be surprised if Span took 4+. Short of it is, I doubt they sign Fowler to 4+.

Yeah, I am not giving Fowler a 4 year contract unless he manages to maintain an .800-OPS for the season. He's about to be thirty and has seen his OPS+ dip below 100. He'll probably rebound some, but not by much.

I I'm somewhat intrigued with the little I know on Blake Hickman. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, as I'm too lazy to check right now, but didn't we draft Hickman back in the day? Sounds like an exciting arm to mold.

According to Iowa's bio we drafted him in the 20th round in 2012 as a catcher out of simeon

2012 would be the first year for this regime, draft-wise, right? If so, Hickman is probably someone on their radar, as we know scouts love to keep tabs on their guys, even after a position-switch.

Cubs drafted him as a pitcher. He was never going to stick behind the plate.

I'm sure redrafting Isaiah Gilliam is an option today, as is drafting Carson Sands' younger brother, Cole. Two prep arms I like are RHPs Drew Finley from San Diego and Joe DeMers. Finley seems to fit the mode of prep arms this regime likes.

The next time the Cubs or Astros have a top 10 pick will be due to:

A. Finishing with a bottom 10 record.

B. Draft picks become tradeable and they trade for one.

C. They will never pick in the top 10 again.

a or b ... not c. At some point, we'll be bad again, and same goes for the Astros. Here's hoping that's a long ways into the future, though.

Really, though, if MLB wants their draft to get more excitement/intrigue, they should

a) Move the draft back far enough that enough top prospects (namely, the college guys) can attend with their families (a part of me thinks the "All-Star Game and Draft" combo is a bad idea though ... I feel like that's too far ... )

b) Allow for trades of picks in the say, top 10 rounds. There would obviously need to be some tweaking, and at some point, teams will have to figure out a way to determine value so that you don't get consistently crazy trades, but that's doable in time, particularly in this analytical era.

I don't think the MLB draft will ever get the intrigue of the NFL and NBA simply because of the plethora of HS kids involved and the fact that most people won't know much about them, but those two simple moves would likely increase fan interest by a fair amount.

A should be broken down into subsets where they try to tank a season vs just sucking cuz they suck.

Who are some guys to look for day 2? Guessing Happ and Dewees should both sign for around slot or less, any over slot guys?

Thanks, I'd really like to see us roll the dice on Matuella if he's there. David Hill also sounds like a guy we'd be in on as a projectable college arm. Is Hooper pretty much unnsignable?

Never say never but his price tag is far too high for his talent. And at this point, his price tag limits him to only a select few teams. He'd have to move off his rumored asking price.

Agree that Hill fits the type of college arms they look for.

There goes Nix to the Padres.

Also thought Taylor Clarke, the Dbacks pick at the top of the 3rd, seemed to fit the profile of Cubs pitcher picks under this regime.
