Is this a good time to wonder why the front office seemed to have no interest in Scherzer?

I mean he required an additional year and $55 mil more than Lester.

 

The nature of the contract made the numbers look bigger than reality. Once you factor in the huge amount of deferred payments, I think FanGraphs had it as only $10 million or so more than Lester.

It isn't quite that simple to evaluate the 2nd round pick, since those draft pool dollars have an impact on multiple picks downstream.
