Some food for thought, especially considering that the Pirates got two framers that aren't terrific hitters this offseason.

 

@Ken_Rosenthal #Pirates, post-Martin, have allowed MLB-high 26 SBs. Rank 18th in CS percentage; 7th last season. Also last in walk rate; 6th last season.

 

Cervelli has been especially bad, 21/26 SB allowed in 16 starts. Granted, 6 of those steals are Billy Hamilton in the first series, and at least 3 of the 6 last night he had no chance to prevent, but I don't think all the attempts are a coincidence either.

Sigh. We know, we know.

But the Brewers are worse, the Reds lost a key starter, and the Cards lost wainwright. Even with you guys getting about 10 games better, we can still win in the Mid 80s.

 

As I said earlier, you guys have, early, established yourselves as the team to beat. But the Pirates are not going away quietly.

I don't think an obviously biased prediction is worth me giving, and I'm not really sure what to predict anyway... but I'm still far more excited for the game than I probably should be for a game in April.

I, too, was trying to think of the big dopey white guy but for some reason his name was escaping me.

So, Baseball Prospectus expects us to play at a .525 pace for the rest of the season, just .002 behind the Cardinals, at .527. I expect that the Cardinals losing Wainwright and the model probably being sunnier on Arrieta than it was before the season are huge factors in closing this gap.
