I still sometimes think about the fact we got him, Grimm, N. Ramirez, AND CJ for just one half season of Garza and just laugh. Theo is pretty damn great at that whole trading thing.

Really? There's only one player on that list that we're pretty sure is an above-average major leaguer, and he's still a middle reliever.

It was a good trade, but it doesn't strike me as giggle-worthy.

Guys can have significant value without having to be pretty sure they're above average major leaguers.

on some level, i just feel like you can't open up a cubs fan to optimism because 9/10 of us are going to run that [expletive] straight to crazytown

They *can*, but I'm not particularly expecting it. Grimm is middling and those kinds of relievers don't typically stick around for long. Olt is still negative WAR for his time here. And Edwards is a pitcher with a history of arm problems, so who knows if we'll ever see anything from him.

oh well [expletive] him then he's nothing special

Nothing that'd make me laugh about the trade over.

Oh sorry, next time I giggle about something I'll be sure to ask myself if it would meet your esteemed standards first.

Manfred basically just told Boras to [expletive] off in regards to spewing off on Bryant.

I loved hearing that from him. Basically said that it's within the rules and it's in the best long-term interests of the team so Boras needs to shut his mouth. Now if we could just get Manfred (and yeah, the MLBPA) to implement the DH in the NL we can toss Schwarber in there and dong everyone else into the L column for years.

Didn't say you couldn't, just said I wouldn't.

That's usually just assumed.

I'm more optimistic on Olt than I have been in a while, but I don't think the math adds up here. Unless you're counting on Olt being +15 or better with the glove(not reasonable), he's not getting to 3 wins with a sub-average bat. Headley had a 102 OPS+ last year, and with +15 defense(he was actually +28 (!)) he's under 3 wins.

More likely in the optimistic scenario, Olt is Castellanos' bat at the other end of the defensive spectrum. That's still a 2+ win player and makes the same point re:Bryant, but I think we need to be careful about calling Olt a slight offensive tweak from being the right handed Valbuena.

i think you're looking at his 58 G for the Yankees on the WAR, he was 4.2 for the season, and +28 UZR/150

best case scenario for him is probably RH Pedro Alvarez, which would be cool, but hopefully the Phillies covet him

Sorry, I didn't word that very well. Headley with +15 defense is ~13 runs worse than what he actually did last year, hence the < 3 wins claim. I picked Headley because he was one of few 3B that were around that offensive threshold.

This makes me happy, even if it's not serious:

Carrie Muskat @CarrieMuskat

#Cubs @CubsJoeMadd on @KrisBryant_23: "I'm looking forward to working with this guy for the next 15 years."

Autists generally don't know when to laugh though

i kind of hate this if only because i'd prefer not to tack on unnecessary pressure, but man is it ever going to be fun if this works out like it might.

Last year, Adidas won the right to Bryant by paying him a deal that sources say is worth about $30,000 a year, which is the money typically paid to a perennial All-Star.

That is obviously a typo and supposed to be 30 million... which should really cut at anybody's feeling bad for him about having to play AAA for two weeks and having to play an extra year before free agency.
