This really makes no sense. He can't play SS any more and Panda's at 3rd. So they're going to stick him in LF which is tough w/ the Green Monster. What happens when he decides he doesn't like that anymore? He's becoming more injury prone and his attitude can be a little shaky at times. This is not a good deal for the Sox.

Yeah I can't see or understand the Red Sox direction. They are either blocking Betts or Bogaerts which seems weird to me.

Probably trading someone. Too many useful players is never something to be avoided.

i figure hanley is moving to LF so they can trade cespedes.

We know he can't play ss anymore and he was terrible at 3b, where sandoval is supposed to be quite good, right?

Fangraphs had him 15/20 qualified 3Bs last year.

Is Hanley the LF really better than their current options, even not including Cespedes? Szymborski ran ZiPS and had him at like 3.3 fWAR this year with standard decline after, and that was generously assuming Hanley is a +10 LF.

Sandoval is fat, move him to DH.

After Ortiz retires, I'd bet that's the plan.

Isn't he actually a pretty good defender, or at least decent?

I love it. Sandoval is a nice player, but over the last 4 seasons he averages:

58.5 runs

71.25 RBI

130.75 games

16.25 HR

139 hits

Didn't make the WS roster in 2010. Go ahead Boston. Pay him $20 mil a year for 5.

To use more relevant numbers, Sandoval has been worth 13.4 wins in 523 games the past 4 seasons. That translates to about 3.8 wins per 150 games.

If he could manage to stay healthy enough to average that many games, at that pace he'd be worth about $114M over 5 years. That obviously doesn't take into account decline or a likely position change if and when his body worsens.

So yeah, I still don't think he's worth that contract at this stage, but it's probably not as bad as you're making it seem.

a win on the open market is looking to be much closer to $7M right now

OK, more margin for the contract to be good despite decline and fat then

If that is what it takes to get a $20 million contract, none of us are going to be able to afford going to the ballpark.

Last year NESN generated operating revenue of $230 million and cash flow of $60 million, according to SNL Kagan.
