Other than him being on the MLB roster or trading him, what other options do the Cubs have with Welly? In order to go down, he'd have to clear waivers (which he wouldn't)?

Convert him to a second baseman, obviously.

you can never have too many 2nd basemen

The Dodgers spent $115.5 mil on Olivera, Alex Guerrero and Erisbel Arruebarruena.

And they're all behind Jimmy Rollins, Howie Kendrick, Juan Uribe, Justin Turner and Darwin Barney on the depth chart.

Must be nice to have the money.

To be fair Kendrick,Uribe and Rollins are on the last year of their contracts. Next year there's a decent chance it looks like 3B:Olivera SS:Seager 2B:Guerrero(though the d sucks)

Can we do one of those things where we basically just give then Castillo, but they have to take Jaxon and half his salary? That might honestly be the most productive return the Cubs could get.

What jersey said. Especially not for just half his already modest salary...wtf

What if the Cubs won't eat his deal to get rid of him? I guess its not the end of the world for him to be a mop up guy. I realize that this would open up another can of worms with regards to the Cubs financial flexibility, but focusing on this hypothetical situation which to me doesn't seem too outrageous of a scenario, what is the best solution to the Jaxon problem, keeping in mind that trip to colonize Mars won't launch for another decade or so.

Trading Castillo for $5.5M or whatever in payroll savings is crazybuckets IMO.

Pretty much. Montero could end up an upper-middle class man's Henry Blanco. David Ross is a bench coach with a roster spot. Schwarber's at least a year and a half away, and even then, he may not be behind the plate. Castillo's 27 years old with a 7.7 career WAR under his belt, and under control through 2017. If Cliff Floyd and Daryl Ward existed on one roster, we can find room for Castillo.

For a post that was made in agreement with mine, I sure disagree with a lot of this.

The point is that you don't want to get rid of a guy who's the closest we have to a sure thing as far as long term catchers go unless we're getting something in return.

If the Cubs deal him (Welly), though – which still strikes me as the slightly more likely outcome – Bruce Levine reports that the Cubs are looking for pitching in trade right now. Specifically, starting pitching, and, even more specifically, starting pitching that could help them right now.

Who would be a possible target?

Cubs and Orioles discuss Castillo and Matusz. Story @670TheScore and @cbschicago

(CBS) – The Chicago Cubs have heard from numerous clubs about catcher Welington Castillo’s availability.

Chicago said it had no interest in a conversation that would have brought back left-handed reliever Brian Matusz from Baltimore this week for the catcher, according to Major League sources.

Matusz, a former starting pitcher and highly projected draft pick, has become a situation and set up-type relief pitcher over the last three seasons. The pitcher averaged one strike out per inning and had a 3-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio the past two years.

Castillo has been regulated to the third catcher role with the Cubs. Chicago traded for Miguel Montero in December. He has three years and $40 million left on his contract. The team also signed veteran catcher David Ross to a two-year deal in January to back up Montero.

Vazquez likely done for the year for Boston. That could get very interesting for the Castillo market.

Where are you seeing that he's done for the year? Looking at Twitter and Rotoworld the consensus seems to be they found 'something' in his elbow but he still needs an MRI to determine severity.

They have the option of simply promoting Swihart. They aren't going to give up much.

They don't want to rely on Swihart, don't think he's ready. Their system is still loaded - they can give up something quite good and barely notice it.
