I'd probably do Russell for Hamels.

lol

You're getting Hamels for 4 or 5 years, Russell for 6.5. The years of control are almost identical, and Hamels is really good at baseball *right now*.

How much longer will he be really good at baseball though?

How guaranteed is it that Russell will be good at it? Prospects *never* bust, right?

Prospects *never* bust, right?

good point i never thought of that also did u no pitchers get injured

have u read moneyball?

Hamels v. the best of 5 guys for the 5th starter this year is probably about a 2 win difference in Hamels' favor

2016 Hamels v. the best of those guys plus up to 25 million to spend on an alternative is probably a negligible difference, maybe slight in Hamels' favor

2017-18 Hamels v. the the best of those options still under contract plus up to 25 million to spend on alternative is probably about a 1 win difference in the field's favor.

Oh, and the field also has the advantage of potential flexibility not to be trapped Jaxon style by negative outcomes(injury, collapse, etc), Hamels as a single player obviously does not have that flexibility.

Trading Russell for Hamels is a complete non-starter.

Yes but what about when those prospects DIE, TT. Where will your argument be then?

what do we look like, the cardinals?

Isn't their pitcher attrition rate even higher?

I'll take that bet.

And as always, you can't just take the best of 5 guys. It's not a better ball situation. You have to pick one, and send them out there, and if they suck you don't get those games back.

The guy who wrote that traded Addison Russell for a starting pitcher, so why shouldn't we?

Correct, that's what I'm referring to, although they obviously have spring training to decide which they like best. I believe in the combo of decisionmaking, coaching, and talent there that the 5th starter will be league average if not better. I do not believe in Hamels' health, ability, or age enough to believe he'll be better than a 4 win pitcher this year.

You believe the Cubs 5th starter will be, at worst, an average major league starting pitcher?

yeah, that's pretty optimistic.

I'm saying I'm confident that whoever wins the 5th starter spot will be league average, with a chance that there's a lightbulb moment where they're a bit better than that. Considering 4 of the 5 guys in contention for that one job have pitched at a 2+ win level previously, I don't think this is an enormous leap.

What I am not saying is that the Cubs will definitely have 5 different starters pitching at a league average level. Number one my confidence in the 5th starter spot is not a guarantee(much like Hamels' rate of production is not a guarantee), and other spots could certainly fall (well) short of expectations. These are pitchers, after all.

I don't think that TT is being that crazy, but does it count if it turns out to be one of the 5th starter candidates while he is playing for another team?

I really hope we keep Wood

i'm confident we will, oddly enough, in large part because of the utility he'll have for Maddon in non-pitching roles

He's a really crappy hitter. Using him in non-pitching roles is a novelty.
