Wait what now

@Ken_Rosenthal Sources: #Padres, #Rays discussing significant trade. Talks involve a number of players. Wil Myers would be main piece going to SD.

Is Hedges going to Tampa? Interesting stuff.

Unless they'd take Baez, I don't know if it would make sense for us.

Uhhhhh, why the hell not?

Myers has turned into a butcher in the field and was completely outplayed by Kevin Kiermaier in every way, but he still projects well because he just turned 24 years old. Which shows why we shouldn't be in any hurry to get rid of just turned 22 year old Javy. Edited by Elrhino

Because Myers is strictly a LF and, as someone mentioned below, has some question marks following a wrist injury. Given that it's still unclear whether Bryant is a LF or 3B long-term, I'd rather not give valuable assets to get a guy who is strictly a LF. At the same time, since Bryant has the potential to be a third baseman, I'd favor keeping him over trading him for Myers.

Where's this Myers is a terrible defender stuff coming from? UZR has him +0 in 150 career games in RF, -2.5 last year and +2.5 this year. He doesn't commit an exorbitant amount of errors either.

Wait, we have to keep two positions open for Bryant? That's ridiculous. If he pans out offensively and has to move to LF because he's a butcher at 3B then you just trade Myers.

To me, "just wait a few months before committing to a long term LF" is a bit more reasonable than "just trade Myers if Bryant can't play 3B". Conversely you could just call Bryant an OF now and meet your future today, but that's less sexy because it lowers Bryant's value a tad and there aren't a ton of good 3B options that aren't already Cubs.

It's just slightly bothersome to effectively have two nebulous positions when were dancing around the whole "do they go for it this year or not." If Myers can be had for a smart deal and think he's going to bounce back I'd like to think they'd do it. I'd just prefer something more long term as opposed to another rental, especially since I look at Soler as the only real OF answer they have right now (No, I'm not all that sold on Al Contra).

Guys might not be available in a few months.

You can't choose timing.

I think people are kinda underplaying the possibility that Myers kinda sucks.

Well the benefit of getting a long term guy is mitigated a good bit if there's a significant chance that you have trade him or Soler/Bryant in the short term. In the case of Myers especially you can proxy his production in the short term until you're at a point where you're more certain of Bryant's future. Adding someone like, say, Parra and pairing him with Ruggiano in LF is going to be pretty similar to what you can expect from Myers in 2015. LF isn't a position where there's a dearth of options so missing out on a long term solution this offseason isn't much of an opportunity cost.

If Myers does end up in San Diego I'd really like to target Seth Smith, that OF is pretty crowded

Might want to consider the possibility that SD is trying to add offense by bringing in an OF that doesn't suck and trading one that does, rather than swapping out one good hitter for another. Why on God's green Earth would they want to get rid of Smith?

Because none of Myers/Kemp/Smith are CF
