I fully expect us to go after a few sucky cheap veterans, but Swisher is a sucky veteran with a really bad contract.

Gomes seems to have a huge man crush on Maddon from their days in Tampa Bay, and has made no secret that he wants to manage one day. Can't we just talk him into being all lockerroom leadery as the 1st base coach and not actually have to depend on him to play baseball?

I saw someone post a slightly older tweet from McCarthy from a few months ago saying he could blow peoples minds and make the case Gomes is more important than Lester. I would like to see that case.

I know McCarthy said the 2012 Oakland A's would have been a 70 win team without Gomes and Brandon Inge. He seems to be all in on clubhouse chemistry.

It sound stupid, but if you have a rookie that comes up and rookies are filled with self-doubt, filled with worry, and now you’re in the big leagues and you come to a team where nobody makes you feel welcome. So now you’re already nervous, you’re kind of worried about your lot, and then the guys around you, you’re not comfortable and you don’t feel like you’re one of them. You don’t feel kind of free and like you can do what you do. But if you have a guy like Jonny Gomes or Brandon Inge or someone who just comes up and is just kind of (BS-ing) with you and it just sort of loosens you up and then everyone else can kind of get in the mix. I know it sounds really stupid, but it’s kind of like being an artist where the more comfortable you feel, usually your better work comes out. I think it’s guys that just put out a comfortable atmosphere and they bring guys in. It’s like that in real life, too, where you’re with a group of friends and there’s people that you wait for to get to the dinner party because after that everybody loosens up and it turns into a good time. It’s guys like that. It goes for veterans and everybody. There’s guys that make you feel more comfortable. That loosens you up, which in turn the person you interactive with — there’s a whole trickle down effect to it that’s impossible to quantify but it does exist in there.”

And then the 2013 A's won 2 more games without Inge, Gomes, or McCarthy

I'm going to be pretty aggravated if they sign Gomes. Sign all the clubhouse guys you want, but make sure they have a role on the team. Gomes is at least 4th on a RH corner OF depth chart, he has no use on the 25 man roster.

anyone have any guesses as to what grandal would cost btw?

i think he's my preferred target at this point

I have no idea, but I'd love to see if they negatively value Maybin on top of Grandal. Early reports are that they want power hitters so not sure how much of a match is there.

maybe they could be fooled into taking Javy?

I wanted to come back to this. What does a trade of Javy to San Diego look like? Grandal is an obvious target and they have SP they would consider moving too. Like mentioned above I really like Maybin as an extra OF/Alcantara insurance too, especially if they're ready to give up on him and do other things with that money.

Grandal and Ross? Is that too much or too little? I still really like Javy and dont really want to move him but the majority on here think he's not going to fulfill his potential and he needs to be moved before he hurts his value even more. Personally I think he'll be fine but if the FO is interested in moving him then maybe Grandal and Ross is a good starting point?

I was thinking Baez + Wood for Grandal + Ross + maybe Maybin, but go ahead and throw Coghlan in too if that gets it done. Don't know if they've got much use for Coghlan though.

if they don't like Coghlan, you could probably just instead volunteer to take Carlos Quentin's $8M salary off their hands and DFA him after ST or whatever

Have there been any reports on how Tyson Ross has found success? His minor league numbers weren't all that inspiring and he didnt reach the majors till later, but his numbers in the big leagues are awesome. Any articles on him or his stuff?

I'm curious if you prefer Cashner over Ross or if you just thought him a more realistic target.

Better than signing Jonny Gomes, let's do it.

I think his slider ranks as one of the best in baseball

more realistic, but the difference between the two isn't major, in terms of my preference

Does Wood even have any trade value?

Maybe to a team that has a rotation of a lot of young guys/guys off injury who want someone they can reasonably count on to give them 170-200 innings of slightly above replacement pitching? Not that, that means he's worth a lot. But that's where I see whatever value he has is, I guess.

Would the Cubs have any interest in Michael Bourn?

Cleveland can't unload Swisher with out eating 90% of that contract.

Maybe Cash, prospect, and Jackson for Bourn?

Wood is a good fit in SD with his flyball tendencies.

McCarthy's comment is not unlike Samardzjia's lobbying for Darwin Barney when he was DFA'd; a guy trying to help his buddies find a job.

and he throws it with appalling frequency.

Not all that much, but the Padres fit the mold of a team that could have use for him. 100+ games in cavernous parks, doesn't really have the money to spend 10-15 million on a mid-tier FA pitcher, you can see a match there if they believed in 2014 not being the new norm. Baez is absolutely the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd attraction in that deal though.

The Giants need to start looking for a third baseman because Pablo Sandoval is likely not coming back to San Francisco. After speaking with two sources, here’s what I’ve been able to put together:

The Giants offered Pablo the same contract given to Hunter Pence, five years at $90 million. Sandoval wanted that deal last Spring when Giants were justifiably suspicious about Pablo’s physical condition. But when that offer came after the World Series, Sandoval countered by asking for a seven year deal.

Sandoval was in Boston yesterday where I am told there is a 90 percent chance that he will sign with the Red Sox. The other 10 percent goes to the Toronto Blue Jays.

McCarthy's comments above were in March 2013. Gomes had just signed a 2/10 deal with the Red Sox that offseason.

Was just told - emphatically -- by a major league source that the SF report of the Giants being out on Sandoval is "NOT'' accurate.
