Get the surgery that shortens your career and allows you to come back this year. It's not like he has much of a career left anyways

 

 

That doesn't seem like something he'd do.

 

Staring at 4 missed postseasons in a row might change his perspective

 

Technically he didn't completely miss that first postseason....

Just woke up to this on Deadspin and thought for sure it was some sort of hyper-trolling.

 

This is beyond anything I can recall. Danny Manning and Grant Hill maybe? Though you could easily argue that Derrick at his best was better than Hill. No question he was better than Manning.

You can lump Rose in with guys like Penny Hardaway in terms of injuries ravaging a potentially great career

 

Thought of Penny shortly after I posted and agree. Its on that level.

True, but in far fewer minutes. Will have to see whether increased exposure drags him down.

The only way the Bulls can get away from his cap number is if they trade him, or if he retires due to the injury and doesn't play basketball again. If he retires and the Bulls are relieved of his cap number and then goes and signs with another team, I believe the moment he first checks into the game, the Bulls are responsible for his cap again. This happened with Darius Miles and the Blazers.

 

Edit: I guess after reading about it, the limit was 10 games for the contract to be valid again.

The stats give the edge to Hill. He was so damn good with the Pistons.

Double Edit: Whoops, I forgot about the stretch provision. From RealGM:

 

The Bulls could simply waive Rose during the Jul 1 - 31 Aug timeframe and use the "Stretch provision" to carry his salary over 5 years in payments directly to Rose and as CAP hits. It lessens the blow and allows them to only have 8-8.3 million a year until the end of the 19-20 season as the CAP should be sky high.

Lot of optimism on Twitter led by KC Johnson that Rose could play again this year. KC has been very careful not to say that but he keeps saying the injury isnt as bad as last years and compared the surgery to Doug McDermott's earlier this year.

Because Rose's history suggests he is quick to get back in time for the playoffs and doesn't look forward to his next contract or his son's graduation

Right..and Rose is a stubborn dude with people that he trusts telling him to be cautious. But being cautious has caused him to play 1 game in 3 postseasons and now he's hurt and in jeopardy is missing a 4th. If there was ever a point where he changed his injury recovery mindset, it would be now.

 

On the other hand, if there is any shot of Rose privately balking at coming back, the Bulls could easily leak his expected timetable for a return to the press to put more pressure on him. It didn't work 2 years ago but the pressure should be even higher now considering the time he's missed, the examples of his peers having a very similar surgery and coming back quick, and the fact that his star is not as bright as it was back then.

While I agree with all of this and it gives me some hope that he might see it this way as well, since it is Rose, I could see him digging in his heels even farther with his previous stances about being super cautious. Even though at this point, I think the best we can hope for in future seasons is that his injury will come with enough time to get back for the playoffs--not that he won't suffer an injury at all. I just doubt he sees it that way. I feel like if anyone questions him about this, he will just get extra stubborn and say something really stupid about his future career or life.

I saw a mention of Gilbert Arenas on Twitter last night. A couple years later with the injuries, but man, that's a career that went down in flames, and quick.
