Its unusual, but not crazy to think that:

 

1. The preverbal bulb has turned on; and

2. Talent evaluators are fallible.

He's a goalie. They stand there and hope the puck hits them, and in the long run it does 91% of the time, give or take for quality of team defense and power-play time. In the short run, it either does 98% of the time and they're brilliant or 82% of the time and they're awful.
