why did this stupid dolt risk his career to spare ray [expletive] rice a few games? unreal.

hubris

Pretty much; "absolute power corrupts"...blah-blah-blah. He's a dumb meatball who figured a declining name player shouldn't have to take any kind of major hit for "just" hitting a woman.

NEW YORK—Following public outcry over his mishandling of Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice’s aggravated assault of his then-fiancée, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell announced Tuesday that the league has adopted a new zero-tolerance policy toward all videotaped domestic abuse. “We hold our players to the highest standards both as professional athletes and as people, so any violence toward women that is recorded, authenticated, and then publicly distributed will be met with an automatic suspension and fine,” said Goodell, adding that the new, stricter guidelines reflect the league’s hard-line stance against any spousal abuse that is clearly and irrefutably captured on film. “I can assure you that any member of this league who strikes a woman in front of a live camera will face swift and heavy consequences. I also want to stress that this utterly reprehensible behavior is something we will in no way tolerate as long as the footage is completely uninterrupted and the entirety of the assault takes place within frame.” Goodell went on to clarify that in such cases, the NFL will cooperate fully with local authorities as soon as the league can no longer prevent incriminating evidence from being leaked to the media.

At the end of the day it is abundantly clear that Goodell/The NFL and the Ravens simply didn't care that much about the incident. They just did not particularly care that much that Ray Rice knocked a woman out and did the bare minimum to push it out of the way and move on and would never have thought twice except for public outcry and the leak. None of the parties at any stage did anything remotely resembling due diligence.

The owners just hired Robert Mueller to conduct an investigation into the NFL's handling of the case, and presumably whether anyone in the League office saw the tape. Apparently Mueller will report to Mara and Rooney.

Load of bull [expletive].

The thing is that the video doesn't show anything we didn't already know. It doesn't change the narrative of the assault at all. How come "Ray Rice" was only trending on twitter after the video leaked? How come the congressional letter to the NFL was only crafted after the video leaked? How come this story is now the front page story of every mainstream media outlet only after the video leaked?

We're all indicting the NFL and Goodell for only taking severe action after seeing a video depicting what we already knew. But then why aren't we doing the same with the media, and really, the general public as a whole?

because the video forces everyone to confront the reality of what it means to punch a woman out cold and drag her unconscious body like a bag of trash for someone else to deal with

So then you have no problem with the fact that the NFL only waited until after the video was leaked to impose stiffer punishments? You have no problem that the Ravens waited until after the video leaked to terminate Ray Rice's contract?

what? no, of course i'm not ok with their deplorable non-reaction to this. but i'm certainly not going to complain that public outcry forced them to get it right

My complaint is that there was no public outcry before Monday's leak. At least not enough to get the NFL to do anything of substance.

yeah there was definitely no chatter of the 2 game suspension being a joke until the 2nd video got released. jesus christ give me a break.

Reports are that the owners are backing Goodell, meaning the only way (right now) he stops being commissioner is by stepping down voluntarily

Everything can change if the Mueller investigation is legit or the media figures out everything by themselves

You do realize that public outcry actually caused them to almost immediately toughen their domestic abuse related punishments? Because it did and maybe you were on holiday or something.

Yes, on paper they did, yet convicted abusers like Greg Hardy continue to play

2 weeks ago, before the video blew up. This was the result of the first outcry.

I think the outcry against Goodell and specifically him stepping down is stronger post elevator video release. There was definitely a lot of outrage at the NFL in general and Goodell to make the punishments more sensible (related also to drug punishments). So I think in some ways the video is worse than many expected but most are under the belief Goodell had seen it and knew what was just confirmed in detail to the rest of us.

I mean, obviously.

What are you trying to say? The claim was there was no outrage before the video. There was. And immediately the NFL made changes (derwood's point about previous cases of abuse really has nothing to do with anything). The new round of outrage is actually stronger not just post video, but post Baltimore/NFL change of heart post-video and again after their obvious cover-up.

The outrage is coming from many angles right now. But there was a whole bunch of outrage before this recent video was released.
