Soler was 2-5 on Saturday, but that has been surrounded by two 0-for-5's and three 0-for-4's. He also struck out in a PH appearance to start this slump, making him 2-28, with 8 Ks since not starting the game on the 12th.

I love Soler a ton but I kinda just want him to finish out the AAA season in Iowa.

explain yourself

While he's doing well, he's still missed a ton of playing time. Also, this regime has put a huge focus on development so I'm more than happy to trust them on when to bring him up.

i just realized you might not have meant "not come up to the MLB this season"... or did you?

I did not mean that. Just want him to finish out the AAA season before doing anything else.

it's hard to imagine it is anything more than the lack of roster space atm. there may be some benefit to having him down there for continued work w/Manny or to have him in a "playoff race", etc., but the benefit of figuring out how to wedge him onto the big league roster (a few weeks before it becomes way easier to do so) is probably not worth the work

Valaika and Szczur are both on the roster right now(and Szczur only came up this weekend), I don't think lack of roster fit is what's keeping Soler down.

yeah, i was thinking about that just now looking at the roster. there could possibly be reasons why they would want those two up, but nothing compelling that i can think of. what would soler have to gain developmentally by another three to four weeks in the PCL? ssr mentioned potential arbitration year after the current deal runs out iirc based on known contract details, but any time up with the team this year would likely negate that path, no? he would seem to be an obvious case of promoting before the 300 AB benchmark

seriously, where do people get the notion that there isn't room?

Tseng has a WHIP of .70 over his last 70 innings and has allowed 18 base runners over his last 30 and 2/3 innings.

That's just ignorant. With all the potential arms at high A next year (current guys @ high A repeating, loaded low A rotation moving up, tons of college arms from Boise) does Tseng have a legit shot to start next year in AA?

Damn. He won't even be 20 until October. Ridiculous.

I've thought about this as well.

I know there's a temptation to bump him, especially because there could be a backlog of SP at Daytona but I hate rushing prospects. I'd rather they send him to Daytona where it's warmer in April and be ready to promote him as early as mid-May.

I'd probably agree with that one as well. The fact that we can even consider him hitting AA during his age 20 season is fantastic.

Torrez, Tseng, Martinez, Underwood, Blackburn, Skulina, Stinnett, Norwood, Williams all could have a claim to a high A rotation spot. And that doesn't include Paniagua who'll be 25 with only single digit starts above low A.

They're pitchers. Enough will be hurt to start the year that there will be room.

Who is Williams?

10th rounder who got $1,000. He won't force the Cubs to promote Tseng more aggressively than needed.

Don't think Norwood is advanced enough to start at Daytona.

Besides, they can piggyback early in the seasons when pitch counts are lower plus some of those potential Daytona pitchers will be hurt.
