Slight upgrade from Handzus?

Right now I'd say so. Ask me again in January and I may change my mind.

A 16 point to 50 point guy seems more than slight to me.

It's a great deal. Dave Bolland got $5.5M in Florida. Richards is better, though older, and is signed for only one year. It gives a bridge to Teuvo and doesn't rush him, and in Chicago, Richards doesn't have to be the "man" like he did in New York. Really savvy move by Bowman.

I don't think the Hawks are done. They are over the cap now, and will have to make one or two more deals.

Did he score 50 last year? I was under the impression he was near the end.

He's near it, but he had 20g and 30 assists on an offensively dull rangers team.

he had 51 points last year in a place where offensive players go to die. he's a pretty big upgrade over handzus.

OK, yeah, that's a lot better than I thought he'd been lately. All I ever hear is people going on about how washed up he is.

He certainly isn't / wasn't worth the contract he was playing under, but I'll take a 50-point center-man on a 1 yr, 2 mill deal any day.

Chicago Blackhawks ‏@NHLBlackhawks 2m

8 MORE YEARS! The #Blackhawks have agreed to terms with Jonathan Toews and @88PKane. http://onego.al/1lUeGIA

The Chicago Blackhawks announced today that the team has agreed to terms with forwards Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane on eight-year contract extensions, which run through the 2022-23 National Hockey League season. A formal press conference will be held at the United Center next week, with day and time being announced at a later date.

definitely higher than i initially expected/hoped, but they both would have gotten that (or more, since teams could pursue them individually) in free agency. as long as the cap is at 75 next season, it's alright.

The Blackhawks have two choices:

1) Hit on a *lot* of prospects in the upcoming seasons

2) Enjoy this as their last season as an elite team for awhile

I think they have a shot to do No. 1, of course, but ick.

unless you're expecting several of the core players to fall off a cliff after next season, i don't see how we stop being an elite team. stop being the globetrotters maybe. the cap will be 74-75 next year, then like 80 the next season. while the kane and toews deals are huge, we still have all the extremely favorable pre-lockout contracts (sharp, hoss, seabrook, keith, hjalmarsson) still on the books for a while.

we're talking about a difference of like 2-3 million a year against the cap if they signed for cheaper. it might cost us somebody like bickell, and then eventually one of sharp/hossa (who are the closest to slowing down from age anyways), but that's about it. i think they'll do that when saad gets signed anyways.

They have done a good job drafting, so they got that going for them. Is there a good site for hockey contract details? When are Hossa, Saad, and Crawford, Keith, Seabrook up?

Sharp will be gone by the end of the next season. Hossa will be "retired" ala Chris Pronger within the next couple of seasons. The salary cap should increase to 74 million next season and continue to rise(although this year its at 69 when most people said 71). It wont be as bad as the last time Toews and Kane had new contracts kick in. They might take a slight step back in 2015-16 season but the Hawks should remain in the hunt for the Cup for the next decade. In 3 years people will look back and say the Hawks got a bargain.

i saw this posted on another site. it shows what kind of situation the hawks will be in, even if the cap only jumps to 73-74. (when he says "next year" he means next offseason)

Next step should be locking down Saad at 4M for 5 years (Similar to Hogdson deal in Buffalo which is 6 yrs/4.25M AAV)

If Cap ends up in 72.5-74M range next year then no Bickell + no Steeger + Not retaining Kruger/Leddy/Oduya leaves Hawks with

Saad-Toews-Kane

Sharp-Teravainen-Hossa

Morin-Shaw-Smith

Danault-?-Hartman

?

Keith-Seabrook

Hjalmarsson-?

?-Johns

?

Crawford

Raanta

6.3M to fill roster at 72.5M cap

7.3M to fill roster at 73.5M cap

7.8M to fill roster at 74M

I saw that too, pretty good.

As for that site, great comedy about all the doom and gloom.
