Think #Cubs are killing it today. Every player they picked in 1st 7 rounds was in top 200 of BA. If they sign 'em all, big day #mlbdraft

I saw this, and I don't really get it. So every guy the took up to pick #199 was in the BA top 200 and that means they're killing it?

I wouldn't be shocked if the Cubs are the only team to do that this year. There are teams that either go way off the reservation (according to BA's board) or will draft cheap senior signs. So in BA's eyes, they're killing it.

There's plenty of guys inside that range that are going to college and/or have high bonus demands. It's actually not all that easy to do, unless you're taking all college juniors.

Pankake? Must take based on name alone.

I'm a fan if he can stick at 3B. Also like his teammate Tannger English as a CF. Is Greg Allen gone (San Diego State CF)? If not, he's probably my favorite bat out there.

If you want him to stick, better not use crisco.

How would that make him stick?

Which is only really possible when your first two guys are underslots.

Killing it by not taking any scrubs, I guess.

Makes sense. Basically, assuming they can sign all 7 of those picks, they did a good job piling up talent without having to punt any picks in the top 7 rounds.

Well yeah, but if there was a year to it this way, this was one. It seems like it was a pretty smart play, given the circumstances (lack of elite talent).

Just listened to an interview with Schwarber on an Indianapolis station. The Cubs told him he would start in Boise.

Smart. If he's killing it there for two or three weeks he can always go to Kane Cnty.

When Boise comes out to play Keizer or Hillsboro, I'm definitely going to go.

jon (dc) just want to say thanks for your hard work. Really enjoy your insight. Is there any chance the guy the Cubs took can play a passable left? Read your body comps on him and it just made me shake my head. Seems kinda like a DH

Klaw (1:55 PM) That was my fear this spring. I don't think he can catch and he'll require some work for LF to be a legitimate option. The Cubs rave about his makeup, so perhaps he can drop the weight and become agile enough to stay out there.

Ed (SoCal) Do you like the Zagunis pick for the Cubs? What can you tell us about him?

Klaw(1:56 PM) Backup - didn't expect to hear his name till at least the 4th/5th round.

Eric (Madison WI) Why the surprise over Weaver to the Cards?

Klaw (2:10 PM) Nowhere near a first-round talent. Short RHP without an avg breaking ball.

#357 on BA's top 500:

Farris started and pitched seven innings in Arizona’s clinching victory of the 2012 College World Series, and was drafted in the 15th round last season by the Astros. If he’s amenable to sign, he’ll go in the first 10 rounds this year as a cost-saving senior with good performance numbers. He doesn’t have big stuff and knows it, so he has developed into a command-oriented, durable starter. He had five complete games in a 6-6, 3.40 season with just 1.5 walks per nine innings, with 100 strikeouts. He’s matured physically and emotionally over four seasons and learned to pitch off his 85-89 mph fastball and changeup, his best pitch. He adds and subtracts from his fastball to get more cut and life. He’s also learned to throw his curveball for strikes, though it’s a below-average pitch on a pro scale.

are all the HS kids left in BA's top 100 basically unsignable at this point?

They'll certainly be wanting large bonuses, at least close to 7 figures, if not more.

Bukauskas-Unsignable by all accounts

Marshall- Announced today he's going to LSU

Weisenberg-wants 7 figures, Stanford commit

Montez de oca- wants 7 figures

McKinney-wants 7 figures

Johnson-no known demands, dad works for Blue Jays

Peterson-no known demands, coming off injury

That's the pitchers, not sure on position players.

In recent years, a few players have announced on draft day via Twitter that they were going to school because they were disappointed they fell and they still ended up signing for hefty bonuses.

As a prospect, I'm not a fan. Don't think he gets past AA with his iffy stuff. But he's a much needed senior to help save some money.

I wonder how those conversations/relationships work for these guys. The system makes it almost mandatory to draft college seniors. Are some of these guys getting drafted people who never would have been before? Are they ending up getting paid any more with the top 10 status, or is the discount back to the old model?

Most likely would have been drafted, but in the later rounds instead of 6-10

Most of the college Seniors that get drafted inside the top 10 rounds are drafted strictly for signability. They usually agree to deals for 10k or so, as they have no leverage at all.

Stinnett is more like James Ramsey from the Cards a few years back. He was a legit top 30 talent and signed for just a couple hundred thousand under slot.

Stinnett is more of a 2/3 round talent. I had guessed he'd sign for half slot, but I'm probably light on that after looking up Ramsey. Still, he'll come in under slot on some level.

The kind of frustrating thing(lending even slightly more hope) is we'll likely draft a few more "tough sign" types, in order to have fall back options from Sands and Cease, if something goes wrong there. Granted, we'd lose their slot values, but there'd be money left over still from the early under slots.

cardinals just drafted that poncedeleon guy who the cubs drafted and sort of signed last year.

Now he'll be a future Cy Young winner and healthy the rest of his career

The fourth post in this thread has been updated with all picks the Cubs have made plus MLB.com's scouting reports and rankings from BA, MLB.com and Scout.com. I'll add the final 30 picks on there tomorrow and I'll add signing bonuses as players sign.

Thanks as always, Raisin. Helps analyzing and definitely helps tracking these guys over the next several weeks.
