So there's a guy on RealGM named MoneyMitch that supposedly has a "source"...so take it for what it's worth...

 

Ok I'll lay out everything I know

 

As constructed Melo prefers the Bulls over all other suitors however he isn't signing out right for 15M or so but he's not going to force Chicago to gut the team

 

He wants to come over via sign and trade but Chicago lacked leverage early on because it was too obvious this is where he wanted to play

 

That's where the Lakers came in, they're the only team that can sign him outright

 

Then came the LBJ/Miami scenario

 

So now the Knicks are left with letting him walk for nothing, letting him walk to Miami or playing ball and getting something for him and helping him get his money and getting to Chicago

 

I'm 99.9% sure he's going to end up in Chicago in my gut I feel it because I know that's what he wants basketball wise

 

If he's right, that makes sense why Melo would wait till Lebron signs in Cleveland, because that gives him another point of leverage with the Miami possibility.

so, semi-conflicting reports aside, assuming isola is right about melo to NY being done, is a gasol + stephenson situation still possible while retaining the MLE for mirotic?

 

if so, that could be like the 2010-12 teams on steroids but with a much weaker east

 

(the on steroid pends obviously hugely pending on who rose is)

So Stephen A Smith apparently just said on the radio that he got a call from Melo's camp and said everyone should hold everything...that the Bulls got in contact with Melo and are back in consideration....

If Melo wants to ever have a chance to win, he needs to come to Chicago. If LeBron goes to Cleveland and they get Love also as rumored, the East is over unless there's another super team. Closest it could get is if Melo and Gasol join a healthy (and still good) Rose and Noah.

Someone on RealGM said you could do Boozer to LA for Gasol plus trade exception, and then send the trade exception and Dunleavy to Indy for Stephenson. Not sure the exact mechanics of how that would work though (not to mention I can't see the Lakers doing that).

I was initially against getting him but now I think the bulls should finalize a deal with Stephenson immediately. Seeing te money Parsons an Heyward are gonna get and knowing teams will get desperate after the major names land, we need to take a shot on Stephenson.

 

If they got Pau and Stephenson (as well as Mirotic and Rose) added to what's already a decent team, I think we win the offseason even compared to Cleveland. And Assuming Rose's health I'd say we have a very good chance of winning a title with that team.

Wait. Wouldn't that kill Melo -> Bulls completely? I thought that was still a possibility (sort of).

Wouldn't that mean a guy like Stephenson is limiting his own options by only considering teams who move on it early?

 

My impression was we are talking 2 or 3 days here, until LeBron makes his decision and the dominos start to fall. No need to panic yourself into a mistake that closes the coffin on Melo.

I think so. I'd go to battle with that team. And we'd still have assets to trade for a big addition if one truly becomes available. I'm a little worried about the lack of outside shooting from the starting group, but it's about the best we can hope for.

Stephenson (34) / JB (6) / Snell (8)

JB (28) / McBuck (20)

Gasol (18) / Taj (30) / Mirotic

Noah (34) / Gasol (14)

 

I'm not even giving Mirotic minutes, because in the scenario that you get Gasol, while retaining Taj and Noah, I think Thibs essentially red-shirts Mirotic (won't be in the regular rotation unless injury). Personally, I'd like to see Taj, Noah, and Gasol kept around 28 minutes each, which would leave 12 minutes for Mirotic. Enough to get his feet wet and give us a chance to see what we have. But with the above rotation, nobody is above 34 minutes.

 

Not a bad backup plan. Has the potential to hit big if Stephenson or JB take another step up and improve their offensive games or if Mirotic turns into a star. Worst case scenario you have the best collection of front-court talent and the best defensive team in the league.

Pretty good defensive team potentially with Stephenson and Butler at the 2-3. Deep with Taj, Noah, Mirotic, and Gasol for the 4-5. But that team isn't good enough to beat Lebron and Love added to the current Cleveland team. And after all, the rumor is IF Lebron, then Love to Cleveland.

That's not a bad start, but I don't think it's a slam dunk to make the finals. Give them a year or 2 to add pieces, and nobody will touch them. But in year 1, I don't think I'd say they'll win the East for sure. They'd probably be the favorites, unless the Bulls do something big though.
