"I did everything possible to stay there after the ’92 season,” Maddux said about his ill-fated departure from the Cubs. “Things didn’t work out and I was fortunate to go back 11 years later. I loved the city of Chicago. I came up a Cub. I figure if you count the minor leagues, I was in Chicago for about 11 years and I was in Atlanta for 11 years.

I kind of split my time with the two teams. Chicago is a special place and I’d love to see them win a World Series here shortly. It would be awesome."

Hearing stuff like this makes me want to find Larry Himes and kick him in the balls.

Larry Himes blamed the Tribune on MLB radio the other day, but wasn't it Himes who told Maddux to piss off and that he had already allocated his money elsewhere (Guzman and Myers, was it?) when Maddux came back to the Cubs one last time?

I want to thank you all for bringing up such wonderful memories.

The book "Entangled in Ivy" is a decent book, but IIRC (its been 4-5 years since I've read it) it does a pretty good job of explaining the Maddux/Cubs situation in 92.

The Cubs not signing Maddux was really my first moment of true heartbreak/anger towards the team. '84 was my first year and '89 obviously was frustrating, but that was the moment when something burned out forever.

The thing is that the Cubs were better the next year because of the Hibbard, Guzman, Myers signings. However, none of those guys pitched in Chicago very long.

That's a funny way of looking at it since they would've been better than that with Maddux.

Yep. I started hating the Cubs after that, even though they remained my favorite team. 20-win, Cy Young award winner who was like 26 or 27 and desperately wanted to stay with his team and they say "don't let the door hit you." Has that happened before or since?
