Bengals continue to out-dumb themselves

Only $17 million is guaranteed. That's not bad.

They only had to pay him ~$1million this year. If he took them farther in the playoffs this year, THEN you offer him the big money

they didn't offer him big money. he's got a two-year contract with a bunch of team options.

I'm only looking at the two years. This year they are now paying him $17m instead of $1m, for no particular reason (unless rewarding mediocrity is a reason )

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/08/05/john-madden-doesnt-believe-in-the-heads-up-football-program/

Via the national TV network it owns and operates, the NFL has launched a “Heads Up Across America” tour, aimed at extolling the virtues of the Heads Up Football program and, in turn, calming the fears of parents who may choke off the supply of future NFL players.

It all went according to plan. Until the effort landed in Canton, for a roundtable discussion including Hall of Fame coach John Madden and Commissioner Roger Goodell.

With the likes of moderator Melissa Stark, Hall of Fame receiver Michael Irvin, and Chris Golic (wife of Mike Golic) praising the Heads Up Football coaching certification process,

“[T]hey can’t learn them in a short time,” Madden said of the techniques taught to coaches in the Heads Up Football program. “I was a coach, and I put a lot of education and experience into coaching. . . . How long does it take to get a certificate?”

“An hour and a half,” Goodell said.

“And all due respect to the program, I don’t believe in it,” Madden replied. “I respect coaches, I respect what good coaches do. I know that you don’t learn to be a coach in an hour and a half.”

And they didn't have to guarantee anything beyond 2 years. If he broke out this year, they'd have to guarantee a whole lot more than that.

Plus, he couldn't take them anywhere in the playoffs without more talent around him. That's a nice team, but the Law Firm and other decent but not good players got way too many snaps for them to do anything in the postseason without a Flacco-esque fluke - and you shouldn't pay somebody for an unrepeatable fluke.

I casually watched the Niners/Ravens last night and knew Gabbert looked terrible, but damn.

@MaioccoCSN: #49ers QB Blaine Gabbert was 3 of 10 for 20 yards with an INT. His passer rating was 0. Then, he threw an incompletion and it rose to 1.7.

Seriously, he looked awful.

I am really trying to keep a level head and temper my enthusiasm, but damn, the Saints are just loaded this year. This is easily the most talented, deepest and balanced team Payton has had since he got here. Brandin Cooks will be the Off ROY.

Yeah, Cooks went to the best situation possible. Ingram looks like hes finally going to do something.

Early this offseason the Lions declined the 2015 option on Fairley’s contract in part because they hoped that playing for a new deal next year would motivate him to lose weight. At first, that worked well — actually, too well, as Fairley lost around 30 pounds and got down to 295, which the team said was too skinny. Fairley then gained back about 10 pounds, and apparently all was well.

But now MLive.com reports that Fairley has continued to pack on the pounds, and has been demoted to the second-team defense in practice this week.

Bleacher Report NFL analyst Matt Miller said Monday in a video on the Bleacher Report website that a disconnect is starting to grow between RG3 and his teammates. According to Miller, much of the issue stems from Griffin’s inability to learn the new offensive system installed by new head coach Jay Gruden. “(The feeling) is that RG3 is not very well-liked in that locker room. We’ve heard things like this before. … The feeling is he started to alienate some of his teammates on the offensive side of the ball. I think a lot of that stems from his struggle to learn this new playbook, the new Jay Gruden system.

Not overly surprising. He comes off as a good guy who had things come to easily and hasn't really grow up yet. Kind of a mental midget when it comes to criticism too.

Sam Bradford done for the year. Torn ACL.

So as of now the QB competition in STL is between Sean Hill, Garrett Gilbert and Austin Davis. They have to go get somebody, right? Cousins, Mallett, Moore? Sanchez?

Mallett would seem like a good idea.

I know he hasn't had a lot of help, but is Bradford now officially a bust?

Yes, compounded by the fact that he was the last mega rookie contract. The crazy thing is that this might be the best Rams team since he's been there.

BJ Raji out for the year

He's been pretty pedestrian ever since the Super Bowl year, but he was finally moved back to nose tackle and he actually looked like a productive player again. Tough loss, especially when the nose tackle/defensive line depth isn't very good.

It's kinda crazy that they can't find a way to protect Rodgers better than they do.
