PFF on DE's

So, does Robert Quinn just go directly into the Hall of Fame after that season, or does he have to finish his career? Almost 3X better than any other DE!!

Seriously, though, shows the issue with modeling anything. It's no doubt directionally correct, but I'd be interested to see what their confidence intervals and things like that are.

Either way, looks like Lamarr Houston could be a bit better than I thought.

I really want the Bears to jump on Walter Thurmond III. With guys like Verner signing for under 6Mil per, WT3 probably won't cost more than 4-5 Mil. Good nickel for Seattle, that would give the Bears all kinds of flexibility. He can start on the outside, or upgrade the nickel if you draft a guy that forces his way on the field.

It seems like they are waiting to see what happens with Tillman and McCown. Those moves will determine what they do at CB and the cap room they have. I'm afraid they'll miss out on anyone significant if they wait though. If they don't sign a starting caliber FA CB, they're going to have to hope for Justin Gilbert or Darqueze Dennard, IMO.

Would love it if they could get Tillman and Thurmond. Thurmond is definitely their best bet if they can't re-sign Tillman.

Don't those numbers skew a bit based on the talent level around you? Tuck had Umenyiura and Pierre-Paul around him the previous year, and basically had neither for the better part of last year with one playing for another team and the other injured and/or playing hurt. The Giants front line looked like it went from one of the best to one of the worst in that same time frame. At the same time, didn't we feel Peppers talent level dropped due in part to the lack of depth/talent at the other front line spots?

What's the story on Wootton? Is he currently slated as the other DE or is he gone?

Free agent. Could be back in theory, but nothing yet.

@RapSheet: Jared Allen wants his fair value after averaging 13 sacks. I’m told he’d be at peace living his life without football if he doesn’t get it.

Sounds about right for him. Not that I blame him, I'd imagine he's one of the NFL players that has enough to last the rest of his life without being in the news for bankruptcy. I mean, how much can you really spend on Wranglers?

While Denver focuses on DeMarcus Ware…Vikings free-agent DE Jared Allen is talking with the Bears and Seattle Seahawks, per league source.

So Mundy will wear number 21...guess that is a pretty good sign that Major Wright is gone.

Also, Houston will wear number 99, and Shea will have to wear something in the 50's with his move to LB.

Another DE out there....Chris Clemons released.

Dealt with some injuries and a lot of timesharing this year, but he's a year removed from 3 straight 11 sack seasons. Does turn 33 during the season though.

I think he would be a good pickup though, if the Bears develop a DE from the draft also. Give him a contract similar to what guys like John Abraham got.

Weird, I didn't think you had to switch out of 90s to be a LB, and I didn't think they made you switch anyways. Wasn't someone for GB wearing 70 because they switched from DE to LB? Or Hester still wearing 23 as a WR. Maybe Shea just wanted the shift (though 50s availability is scarce for the Bears)

Now can we get real news so I can stop talking about uniform numbers?

First of all, the number requirements are so stupid. Why does it matter?

Secondly, I don't understand why Shea has to be in the 50s as a LB? Is it because he's a 4-3 LB? Because guys like Lawrence Timmons and Aldon Smith have numbers in the 90s.

PFF's thoughts:

With a -7.7 grade in 2013 you might think Chris Clemons is done. But it’s important to remember he was working his way back from a January ACL tear and finished the season extremely strong. His NFC Conference Championship efforts combined with his Super Bowl play earned him a +9.7 grade alone. So now the Seahawks have released expect a market to develop for him with the Jaguars the obvious candidate to pick him up. There’s some juice left in his tank.

Hmmm...wikipedia agrees with you. I can't explain it.

Since the numbering system was implemented in 1973, only two major changes have been made. In 1984, the NFL allowed defensive lineman and linebackers to wear jersey numbers in the 90–99 range, since more teams were making use of the 3–4 defense and thus were quickly exhausting numbers for linebackers, who previously were only allowed to wear numbers in the 50–59 range. (Before this change, the NFL had outlawed the 90–99 range for regular season use since it was rarely issued before 1973, but did permit it for the preseason; Lawrence Taylor wore his college number 98 his rookie training camp with the Giants in 1981 before switching to his more familiar 56 before the start of the season.)

Shea doesn't have to switch due to position change. I would guess he either wanted a "ceremonial fresh start" or jersey 99 was meaningful in contract negotiations with Houston. Shea only took 99 after somebody else had his college number.
