Stuart Scott looks like he's fixin to croak.

Didn't his cancer come back?

Yeah, changed my post when I read on twitter that he was sick. I totally forgot, just thought he was old.

Does someone have video or gif of that play aside from NFL.com? Because they don't show the replay, and from the live angle it doesn't look like Gronkowski has a prayer in the world at getting to that pass even if Kuechly turned into dust at the snap.

It was close enough. The contact began where the ball was thrown. You cant do that to a receiver.

I think Brady threw that ball expecting to get the call.

The penalty should've been called. I think Robert Lester breaks up that pass anyway, though.

I can see that, but from the reaction here and on twitter I guess I was expecting something a lot more sinister than "the defender broke the rules even though the play ends the same way no matter what".

Yeah, maybe it can't be called "pass interference" if you carry a player out of the area, but it's an absurdly easy holding and/or illegal contact call.

Refs should be fired in a few hours. Will keep their jobs for the next few decades.

The union works!

Holding and illegal contact can only be called if the ball isn't in the air yet. The refs essentially ruled that the ball was already in the air when the contact occurred and was also uncatchable, which is a questionable but reasonable interpretation of that play.

I feel like I've seen that same type of foul called a hundred times, so picking up the flag there just seems wrong.

I felt that it should have been a penalty. I think the Carolina player still picks it off if there is no contact, but a defender should never be allowed to do what he did to Gronk on a play like that. If that was a Bears receiver, I would have lost my mind with rage that the game ended like that.

Not according to any rule I've seen

ILLEGAL CONTACT BEYOND FIVE-YARD ZONE

Beyond the five-yard zone, if the player who receives the snap remains in the pocket with the ball, a defender

may use his hands or arms only to defend or protect himself against impending contact caused by a

receiver. If the receiver attempts to evade the defender, the defender cannot chuck him, or extend an

arm(s) to cut off or hook him, causing contact that redirects, restricts, or impedes the receiver in any way

DEFENSIVE HOLDING

Article 6

A defensive player may not:

(a) tackle or hold an opponent other than a runner. Otherwise, he may use his hands, arms or body only

to defend or protect himself against an obstructing opponent in an attempt to reach a runner. After a

loose ball has touched the ground, a defensive player may legally block or otherwise use his hands or

arms to push or pull an opponent out of the way in a personal attempt to recover the ball

But it's not even academic, as he was being bear-hugged before the ball was thrown

For illegal contact I bolded the part why it can't be called after the ball is released. Defensive holding is a murkier case where I've seen different opinions on. I wish they had asked the NFL VP of officiating about that when he reviewed the play (I think the VP without saying it essentially admitted that the call was wrong, but they weren't downgrading the officials because it was close enough to make it a very reasonable call to make).

They never lined up the timing of Brady throwing and the contact in the end zone, but from looking at it I don't think you're right on the contact occurring before the ball was thrown. Right after contact was made you can see the ball and it already is well on its way. And everybody who may have access to more advanced tape on the play seems to assume that the ball was already out, so I trust their judgement as well.
