Of note are Jen-Ho Tseng, Jefferson Mejia and Gleyber Torres are making their US debut (it cuts off the OFs but I assume Eloy Jimenez is too). Frandy de la Rosa is healthy and Mark Malave is back to catching.

What does the Instructional League do? I remember coaches pitched underhand to their own team when I was in them and you had a little pitcher next to him which was basically where the ball ended up to make everybody stop. But I assume this is different.

Do they play other teams?

Oh yeah, with the amount of players and all they even get some split squad games in. Not sure, but I think they get in 30-40 games.

By the way, instructs are informal . AZPhil keeps stats, most teams won't release them. Plus, you may have extra guys hit, other odd things like that too. Very strict pitch counts. FYI, it was during an instruct game that Javy did his famous "I'll do WTF I want" thing.

Yeah, they play split squads and also other teams. The games are very informal - one year, to work on his base stealing, Felix Pie pinch ran for any Cub who got to first with second base empty.

No, Baez did it last April in extended spring training against the Angels extended spring training game.

Split squads might be tough for a team with 2 outfielders.

Play all 7 reserve catchers at once like it's the HR Derby.

AZ Phil has the instructs roster up. Tseng, Jefferson Mejia, and Gleyber Torres are on the roster. Interestingly he said G.Papaccio, M.Malave, and B.Carhart are being converted to catcher.

Papaccio had the hands/arm/accuracy at short, in the brief time I saw him. Not a good judge of range, so maybe that was limited. I know SS is a "loaded" position organizationally, so maybe they're high enough on his bat they want to move him somewhere he's got a better chance to contribute.

Are these going to be held at the new facility?

What is the DSL? Dominican Summer League? If they are skipping it, what's next? Can someone give me an idea of the progress level for guys that young IE: the levels below boise?

The DSL (Dominican Summer League) and VSL (Venezuelan Summer League) are the rookie leagues that most Latin American prospects play in their first professional year(s). From there, the next step is the AZL, another rookie league. After that is Boise in the NWL, etc.

Obviously some prospects will skip levels, which would be a good sign. Very few Latin American prospects under the Cubs have gone straight to the US in their age 17 season (of the top of my head, Carlos Zambrano, Felix Pie and Larry Suarez are the only three I can think of). It's a move reserved for players who get big bonuses and who are thought to be able to handle both a more advanced level of baseball and playing in a foreign country immediately. Starting in the DSL doesn't mean a player isn't a prospect or won't move quickly (Starlin Castro was in the DSL at 17, AZL at 18 and then skipped 2 levels to play at A+ and AA in his age 19 season).

The new facilities won't be open till December. Instructs will take place at Fitch.

Jimenez scheduled for Dominican Academy in October. US debut likely in spring, according to AZPhil.

i assume that means debut in instructs? i can't imagine they'd be talking about playing live games in the spring, meaning that he'd be playing in kane county without ever playing a game in the DSL, AZL or NWL.

Jimenez will debut in Dominican instructs (like most Latin players ticketed for the AZL, DSL or VSL). He'd make his US debut in spring training and if he stays in the US, he'll stay at extended spring training and then play in the AZL.

Do they get paid extra to play in instructs or the AFL?
