Feels like the non-surgical option almost never works and takes just as long.

i doubt they would bother with it if they didn't think it would work

ultimately, they need to fix his mechanics. he's got that kerry wood elbow thing going in his rotation

Seriously, can we identify more 5 or more active pitchers who have had 5 or more seasons of 115 or better ERA+ and not had major reconstructive arm surgery at some point?

EDIT

I may be wrong, but I think these guys qualify:

Grienke

Kershaw

Buehrle

Lester (including this season's 150 ERA+)

Sabathia

But yeah, it's...pretty bleak

Didn't Weaver have TJS at some point? Or was there a stretch where he seemed to be nicked-up all the time?

And when you look at that list it makes you realize what an incredible risk it is to give a pitcher a 4 or 5 year contract for big money. The Shark deal makes even more sense in that context.

I would've bet on that too, but looking at his BR page, last year was his low since his debut with 24 starts.

I hope Tanaka blows junks and this turns out to be a horrible signing by the Yankees.

WORSE than A-Rod's re-signing.

Meant to say "chunks" but point still stands.

Hmmm. Does that really happen with a guy who has 7 years of pro baseball under his belt, working on #8? I guess he is only 25.

well yeah, that's the rub. but if you're trying to protect your investment, you have to try push little changes to help take some of the stress off of the elbow (making sure it's not transferred elsewhere) and hope your coaching and instruction is strong enough help him regain some of the ball movement he'll lose

I know Yankees can't have facial hair, but are they even allowed to blow junks?

only on even-numbered days.

And Sabathia's career is basically over at 33.

And Verlander is a shell of himself

well, sabathia's problem probably stems from him carrying 300 lbs for like the past 10 years.

From the injury rates, that may have helped him as much as hurt him, considering he's been one of the 2-3 most durable starters over the past 10 years.
