Vitters>Olt

Villanueva>Vitters>Olt

If only Vitters could stop breaking all his [expletive].

I still like Vitters more than Villanueva but I agree that at this point Villanueva>Olt

Vitters has been a slightly better hitter, but he's an awful defender at 3B while Villanueva is a plus defender. I think you have to give the overall edge to Villanueva.

Olt has been horrific. There is no getting around that.

I don't anticipate him ever being anything more than a utility type going forward.

There are serious problems when you're hitting .180 in the PCL.

What's meant by "write him off"?

Cut him? Trade him for little value? Stop penciling him from 2014 lineups? Put him in an imaginary "no chance" category?

His chances of being an MLB contributor have plummeted. He'll get a chance to turn that around.

To consider him a total non-prospect with no substantive MLB future. Which I suspect you know I meant.

The problem for Olt is this isn't the organization or the position to take a mulligan year. Assuming Vitters gets moved to another position (or organization) in the offseason, that still leaves Villanueva breathing down his neck. Who knows how rapidly Bryant is going to ascend up the system and/or whether Baez ultimately gets moved. Olt's meal ticket is being a great 3B glove, but what's his MLB tool when there's no room to play 3B?

I wouldn't write Olt off as a prospect, but I would write him off being the opening day starter at 3B. And since his reps would be down as a bench player, he should start at AAA. He could work his way to the big league club early on, but see no way he starts there at this point. I don't think there's much of a 3B market at this point either so Valbuena looks like he's the man at 3B again, so it's really a race between Olt, Bryant, Baez, and to a lesser extent Villanueva as to who can knock him off first.

At the time of the trade:

Olt: Down year but reasons to think he could snap back

Baez: promoted to AA and hitting pretty well, but 17 Ks in 12 games

Bryant: 2 AZL games to his professional career

Villanueva: .746 OPS at AA

Since the Garza trade:

Olt: .133/.188/.267/.454 at Iowa

Baez: .319/.386/.637/1.024 at Tennessee

Bryant: .338/.395/.716/1.112 at Boise and Daytona

Villanueva: .341/.396/.622/1.018 at Tennessee

When the Garza trade was put on hold for bad physical(s), there was some talk of injecting Seattle into the trade since they had interest in Olt. Rumors were that they Cubs would get an arm for Olt. Sure would like to know which arms were available from Seattle.

i'm trying to decide if i should worry about the swing-and-miss in bryant's game, or just ride the wave of 70 power.

The power thing. Worst case, he's Pedro Alvarez, and that's not bad.

Bryant is not going to strike out that much.

Edwards fastball quoted between 94-96 tonight. Thru 5, he's allowed 1 hit, no walks while striking out 3.

He's done, Reed coming in.

I know. Its strange. He had such a low pitch count...

Edwards in Daytona 17.2 IP, 5 H, 5 BB, 22 K, 0.57 WHIP, 1.53 ERA.

He might be on an innings limit due to the fact that he only pitched 67 pro innings last season and the D-Cubs are likely headed to the playoffs. Edwards looks to have 3 more starts prior to the playoffs, so...

Pineyro currently has 43.2 IP in High-A. With 2-3 more starts, he could reach 55-60 innings by the end of the year. He had 66 IP at Low-A before being promoted. It's possible he could start next season in AA if he pitches well next spring. If so, Tennessee would have a fun rotation to watch.

Pierce Johnson

C.J. Edwards

Corey Black

Ivan Pineyro

Ben Wells

After Rusin, Arrieta, etc., I'd say that constitutes wave #2...

Vogey doubles, Bryant singles him home.

I hope that happens with regularity for the Cubs in 2-3 years...

i hope that rizzo singles bryant home and vogelbach is playing for some american league organization that traded us a really good starting pitcher.
