Pretty sure the Cubs are gonna draft Alex Jackson regardless if they have the 3rd or 4th pick. No chance at catching the Marlins or Astros for Rodon or Beede.

Hoffman is clearly ahead of Beede right now. McLeod DOES evisently love Jackson though. Personally, if things were held tomorrow and we've got the 4th pick, I'm hoping Kolek gets past the White Sox.....

that's pretty bold to be pretty sure about a team selecting a 17 year old player who still has his senior year ahead of him, and we still don't know where the cubs will be picking.

He also seems to think Beede is going to be a top-2 pick when no one else thinks that.

Not that McLeod wouldn't like Jackson, but are we just basing this off of that one ABTY post? I'll preface it again with the fact that i'd rather have him posts bits of info because they are certainly entertaining and provide discussion, but he was wrong about so many things this deadline (and in the past) that I really don't trust much that he says in all honesty. Marlin's the only one I trust.

Also the fact that we seem to be intent on addressing the organizational catcher situation, and that Jackson seems like he fits the profile of the type of player they are looking for.

100% confidence is probably a bit much, but it wouldn't be at all surprising.

Does he stay at catcher though? Or do you Harper him to OF to get him to the bigs sooner/extend his career? I realize he isn't the prospect Harper was, but it's possible (for whichever team picks him)

Yeah, there's been talk that his camp wants him to move but thus far, he hasn't. He projects as a better defensive catcher than Harper but not an elite defender and his bat would play just fine in RF.

I'd be pretty happy with Jackson (as his profile stands now), but if an elite college bat shows up and we can take another one of those, I'd have no complaints.

Those guys are fun.

Hells yeah.

and please don't take into account the theory of addressing the organizational catching depth in the decision making process.

Agreed. If you need organizational depth at a position you have plenty of crapshoot rounds which to address it. Especially with a position like catcher, you can probably accept you'll just fill in with whatever FA defensive minded catcher who's the least offensive 8 hitter you can find.

ive only read a couple things about jackson, and neither sounded game changing or anything. is it just because he's a nice kid like almora?

Jim Callis put out an (obviously) very preliminarily top 10 for next year:

1. Carlos Rodon, lhp, North Carolina State

Spectacular summer with Team USA cements him as clear top prospect for now.

2. Jeff Hoffman, rhp, East Carolina

Starred in Cape Cod League last two summers with mid-90s fastball, big-breaking curve.

3. Tyler Kolek, rhp, Shepherd (Texas) HS

His size (6-foot-6, 250-pounds), consistent upper-90s fastball make him the top prep prospect.

4. Trea Turner, ss, North Carolina State

More than just a burner, he also offers hitting prowess and the ability to stick at shortstop.

5. Alex Jackson, c/of, Rancho Bernardo HS, San Diego

Plays a premium position, has some of the best power potential in the 2014 crop.

6. Jacob Gatewood, ss, Clovis (Calif.) HS

Put on a show during Home Run Derby at Citi Field, may wind up at third base down the road.

7. Tyler Beede, rhp, Vanderbilt

Can make hitters swing and miss with three pitches but can’t always control and command them.

8. Touki Toussaint, rhp, Coral Springs (Fla.) Christian HS

Has struggled with command this summer but his premium stuff is impossible to deny.

9. Brady Aiken, lhp/of, Cathedral Catholic HS, San Diego

Projectable athlete could have three plus pitches in time, reminds me of Trey Ball at same stage.

10. Aaron Nola, rhp, Louisiana State

With his solid fastball, plus changeup and impressive pitchability, he’ll move quickly in pro ball.

supposedly projects to have great power and plays catcher extremely well (on top of the makeup you sort of mentioned)

We probably should move the actual draft talk out of this thread.

Especially for a 17 year old.

Especially for a 17 year old.

Jackson's mix of elite pop times, current receiving ability, athleticism, power and leadership make him possibly the best prep catching prospect in a while. Likely better than Reese McGuire who was selected 14th by the Pirates this year. But it is way too early to be zeroing in on any one player.

The mere fact that he's 17 and that all any expert scout can say right now is "possibly this" or "possibly that" is the rub. Obviously, he is got to play his senior season first.

Agreed. That shouldn't be addressed in the first round, but the position value and rarity of great catching prospects should be factored in. It shouldn't outweigh the usual high floor/high ceiling profile.

Any prospect taken in the top 5 of a solid draft class needs to be special. At this point, all we know is that Jackson has a chance to be special at a very important position.

The Cubs are currently in the 4th draft slot. A game and a half ahead of the Brewers and 3 and a half games back of the White Sox for the 3rd pick. There are 6 teams within 3 games of the Cubs who have 37 games left to play.

I would love the 3rd pick.

If we hit another home run with this draft pick we are truly set going forward.

Its a little too early to call the shot on the recent drafts.

I ask this without knowing the answer, how many people drafted after the respective cub in their respective year would people take over Baez, Almora, and Bryant?
