It's the perverse "Cubs lost, other crappy teams won, today was a good day" rhetoric that's distasteful to me.

Isn't it more of a silver linings situation than a perverse and distasteful endeavor? I think everybody wants the Cubs to win every game, but we know that's not going to happen and they are going to lose more than they win, so the only upshot to that is how it affects what they can acquire in the future. It's harmless nonsense.

I just want the Cubs to have good peripherals, but be unlucky the rest if the way. Like if our starters deal every game and our set up men get hold and the Gregg wants to blow some saves and pick up the L I won't be mad.

No, I won't track it daily, not this far out at least, but with 1 to 2 weeks left I'll look a little closer if its gonna be close on the over/under 10th spot. Not that keeping verse losing the pick would necessarily change my mind anyways in regards to a FA, but it'd be nice for it not to be a factor at all.

Agreed on all counts. Great post. Same with hitters. If Rizzo, Castro, and Lake want to do awesome, but the revolving door at 3B and Barney want to suck badly, that's fine with me as they won't be here when the Cubs are good anyway.

We're not cracking the top 3 unless something goes horribly wrong, but having the 4th or 5th pick is fine with me. I really would rather not have an NL team or the White Sox in the top 2, though, as it seems that the 2 pitchers are likely to go there.

Here's the thing. While Hoffman and Rodon seem the odds on for 1 and 2, there's still a long ways to go. They could get hurt, as pitchers are apt to do. Other players might step up like Gray, etc.

I just hope there are as many elite players in the draft as the Cubs' pick.

Right now, my gut tells me that Rodon, Hoffman, and Beede will all be considered elite. Same with Trea Turner. As far as HS kids go, I'll say Jacob Gatewood, Alex Jackson, Tyler Kolek, and Touki Touissant(who's stock has currently dropped a tad). But there are plenty more on both the college and HS side that can make themselves elite.

I don't think we know that they are going to lose more than they win between now and the end of the season.

We don't know that, but we do know they will end the season with more losses than wins, and it's a decent bet that they will have more losses than wins the next two months. Does not change the point that was being made.

Beede has a ways to go before he'd be considered elite. Obviously he has the stuff to turn it around but his control is a mess right now.

The Cubs clearly need an elite arm and if the "right one" is there, they'll probably take him. But they've had a couple shots now and have passed on a really good pitcher. If they do the same next summer, I'm pulling for Alex Jackson. Love his story, his talent and his ability to play catcher. As of now, it's going to take a top 10, maybe top 5 pick to get him...

To be fair, it sounds like the Cubs have only passed once on a really good arm (Jonathan Gray this year).

Appel was not an option in 2012 due to his price tag so I don't think it's fair to say they passed on him. We've heard enough noise that they actually likes Appel more than Bryant this year but obviously had no chance at Appel.

I feel like every year my brain tells me we should take a pitcher but my heart tells me "Man, if we just added one more hitter imagine how even more super-stacked we'd be in that department. Just one more..."

There's a not so small part of me that thinks that we shouldn't take a pitcher in the first round, ever.

I am absolutely dying to have a true "ace". But its very hard to argue with the strategy of high ceiling, high floor position player in the 1st, followed by tons of pitching in rounds 2-10, especially when they're taking guys with good stuff and throw strikes. God, I hope McLeod is teaching someone the ropes, because I can't see him lasting more than another year or two, if we're lucky.

This. I can live with just drafting hitters forever and scoring 950 runs a year and hoping that our coaching can keep turning out OK pitching staffs.

Agreed. If the position player is a better bet to succeed, value is value. Find the right fit with the right team, and you can trade great hitting prospects for a great pitcher.

Need for fecal league update, growing. .

The Cubs are currently 5th. 1.5 games back of Milwaukee for 4th. A game ahead of the Twins, Giants and Rockies. It's tenuous and there's a long way to go. Two days from now the Cubs could be in the 11th slot.

4th and 5.5 back of the Sox.

Indeed. It's nice to have the tie-breaker over everyone except Houston. Even though the Cubs are currently tied with Milwaukee for the 4th pick, they are effectively a game ahead. This makes them 1.5 ahead of San Francisco, 2 ahead of the Phillies, 2.5 ahead of the Angels, and 3 ahead of San Diego, Minnesota and Toronto.

There are 43 games left to play.

That is pretty damn big given how many teams suck. And, I mean, the Whitesox are awful, but I still feel like they can grit their way to make the #3 spot interesting.

The Cubs currently are in the 4th draft slot by a half game over Milwaukee which is essentially a game and a half because the Cubs have the tie-breaker. They trail the White Sox for the 3rd pick by 4 games and the Marlins by 5.5 for the 2nd pick.

If we include the tie-breaker, the Cubs now hold the 4th pick by:

1.5 Brewers

2.0 Phillies

2.5 Twins

3.0 Giants

3.0 Angels

3.5 Padres

4.5 Blue Jays

4.5 Mets

5.0 Mariners

5.0 Rockies

There are 39 games left to play.
