While the Iowa lineup would be the baseball equivalent of a discount spare parts shop, a rotation of Arrieta/Grimm/Hendricks/Cabrera/Loux would make them very watchable. I doubt it would stack up that way, but if so.

Cabrera isn't starting at Iowa.

Cabrera not starting still befuddles me. It's not as if he was ... bad at Tennessee. Again, I've always thought he was a pen arm, but it seems odd to spend half the year having him start and then moving him to the pen ... without him failing. I guess there's always the "work on all his pitches" argument, but it seemed like they were giving him a legitimate chance to start.

Did he pass it by that much? I thought he threw some innings in winter league as well, although I don't recall right now, so I thought he was closer to 100 innings last year. Anyhow, if that's the case, that makes sense.

Edit: Let's see, fangraphs has him at 76.2 last year, and 119.1 this year. That is a fairly big jump already. Honestly, if it's an innings issue, I really wouldn't mind if they just shut him down a bit and let him get some work at fall/winter ball.

As a side note, I think Szczur looks like what he is, a possible 2nd tier squad starting CF, a depth OF on a quality team, who is going through a big slump. He had a solid first half (a good month, a eh month, and an average month), and a horrid July.

Cabrera is pretty close to getting Sean Marshall'd I think. There's still hope for him as a starter, but odds are on him being a reliever long-term, and time isn't on his side to get him the development he needs to be a starter in the Cubs organization.

With him being out of options, he basically has to win a rotation job in the spring next year if he's going to start at all. They can't send him down to Iowa to stretch him out.

So he is out of options next year? That was my memory, and I was going to word that more strongly in light of that fact, but Arizona Phil's chart confused me.

And now, the tarp is back on. [expletive] Daytona.

I don't think even Szczur's first half projected to a 2nd-tier starting outfielder in the major leagues.

I don't think it's that out there to suggest that his first half gave the impression he could be a 2nd tier starting CF. I think someone, maybe Callis, said that as well. I mean, Brett Gardner had a .259/.345/.369 line, so offensively, it's not hard to think Szczur couldn't potentially do something like that.

I've never really bought him as a starter, even though he put up solid enough numbers this year. There's just enough bouts of inconsistency to think that he's simply better off in the pen. That said, with him throwing roughly 120-130 innings this year, I guess they could slot him as the 5th starter next year and just ... give it a roll and target, say, 150 innings. I doubt they'll do that, and I still think he might be the closer of the future.

My thoughts exactly. I don't think he's anyone you go into any season planning on him being your everyday CF. But I also don't think it's bad enough yet where you take him off the 40 man without much better options.

That being said, I do think he needs to start putting up better numbers. You'd like a guy with no power to display a stronger hit tool. He's not there yet. And he needs to get more efficient as a basestealer. Has 20 SBs, but has been caught 10 times.

Alzolay's been really, really good. Lists at only 6'0", though, so not a lot of RH 6-foot power pitchers. No info other than the stats and that he wasn't a notable dollar signing.

No problem with Cabrera move. He'd pitched 130-140 innings each 2 and 3 years ago, so not sure how much innings concerns factored. Probably just an effort to find some role where he might make it. I'd thought there was the chance that maybe he'd really explode this season and dominate AA, but that didn't happen. He wasn't especially impressive, and certainly hadn't justified much claim to be a big-league starter. 3.20 ERA for a 24-year-old 8-year vet in AA is nothing special. Lots of HR's as has been his career norm, unexceptional WHIP, a 2.6 K/BB isn't "wow".

He's got a chance to make it as a 7th inning type guy.

Armando Rivero is still beasting.

I think he needs to be bumped to Daytona.
