I'm going to make this a new thread since the smoke is strong enough to split it out from where others are being discussed.

First off, to reiterate. Cubs Den: Garza to Texas looks likely: http://www.chicagonow.com/cubs-den/2013/07/garza-to-texas-looks-likely/

I had heard from some industry people this weekend that Texas would be the odds on favorite to obtain the best pitcher on the market. We also heard more later that would bolster that information.

Now, someone who appears to be the Rangers version of Mooney is saying the Rangers are close to getting Garza and Marlon Byrd.

@DFWSportsBeat Rangers reportedly nearing deal for Garza And Marlon Byrd from Cubs. Olt in deal...more to come

@DFWSportsBeat Byrd from Mets btw

Well, my guess is nothing goes down tonight or tomorrow, due to Selig not liking interruptions and all. I'll stick to my prediction that if its the Rangers, it'll be Olt, Luke Jackson, and Neil Ramirez.

I would be very happy with that return.

Rangers are a good trading partner. They have a lot of interesting young arms. Like was said in the other thread, if Olt comes over....hope he's the clear 3rd piece.

Hopefully the scouts on our end feel there is something in Olt's mechanics/approach that can be fixed pretty easily.

Yeah, just like everyone thought they could fix Brett Jackson.

Well yeah. I'm on board with him being a non-headliner guy and a clear 3rd or 4th piece. I was just saying if they feel he's worth targeting in a trade I'd hope they feel like they see something that can be changed or fixed because whatever he's doing now isn't cutting it.

While it may not excite everyone, my guess is the holdup is trying to get Martin Perez in the deal. Personally, I'd be very happy if we somehow got him for half a season of Garza. Even moreso, if Olt or Jackson came along with him.

luke jackson

PROS throws hard, strikes out lots of guys

CONS walks lots of guys, suffers from early 2010s white man tool hair/hat malady

mike olt

PROS looks like a power hitting third baseman, used to hit like a power hitting third baseman

CONS currently hits like [expletive]

neil ramirez

PROS currently striking out everyone in aa

CONS is 24 in aa, is in aa because last year he was sort of a disaster at aaa, first name won out over last name and therefore is white

ON THE WHOLE this would be okay i guess because i really don't think we are considering re-signing garza at all, but it would be nice if there was one prospect here without an "uhhh, this will need to change completely for him to be a real major leaguer" red flag attached.

Seriously, why do the Cubs want Olt at all? I hope it's so they can package him to get someone else. They're getting good production out of 3rd right now and just signed a kid who should be fast tracked. He's not a solution. I like the idea of loading up on pitchers who induce ground balls though.

I think Bryant was unnecessary, as far as filling out an IF anyway. As I see Javy as our longterm 3B and Alcantara at 2B. That said, I could see Olt vetting a fulltime shot next year, with Valbuena moving over to 2B and Barney getting dealt.

That doesn't look too exciting to me. I was hoping we could get a real "top" prospect and a couple of "interesting" prospects.

how about Olt playing first and Rizzo getting dealt

That's probably a less likely scenario than Profar coming over in the deal and Castro getting dealt.

The good news is that you can still hope for that, as no trade has been done. But I think you're the poster who doesn't like anything the Cubs do, so there is a good chance you won't like whatever trade is pulled off.

My apologies if you aren't the poster that doesn't like anything the Cubs do.

I think Martin Perez or someone with more value has to be involved if a deal is close considering the "high price" everyone has been reporting. No reason to settle for a deal led by Mike Olt when you still have a few weeks.

Well, hey, as long you're being realistic in your expectations.

Any chance to get Jackson AND Perez? Guessing no. I like Jackson more (ironically) but he's a couple years away. I think I'd prefer Jackson and Ramirez over Perez and probably whatever other arm they'd be willing to throw in...especially if Olt is involved.

The Rangers have a ton of young talent in Hickory and across the low minors. If you can't have Perez, Olt and a few of the lower guys of your choice isn't bad.
