I just want the front office to go with their conviction of who will be the biggest impact player with the #2 pick. Playing the underslot game doesn't really interest me, because, to be honest, if you look at the past few drafts, nothing around picks 30-50 really blows me out of the water. Unless there is something I'm completely missing.

Gray's news this week puts enough doubt in my mind to place him a half step behind the other two. I won't be upset with any of the three, but at the moment:

1a Appel

1b Bryant

2 Gray

The prospect of a fast moving pitching prospect is pretty exciting to me, especially considering our pitching depth above Kane County is a travesty.

This is kinda where I am.

That's right now, of course. As similarly talented as they all are, my opinion seems to change for almost no reason whatsoever. I still think money might have to be the deciding factor, but they'll all probably be pretty close there too.

You'd want to go back further than that to give those players time to mature. From 2005-2007, here's a sampling of 2nd rounders:

Jordan Zimmermann

Freddie Freeman

Gicancarlo Stanton

Trevor Cahill

Justin Masterson

Brett Anderson

Jon Jay

Chase Headley

Yunel Escobar

Travis Wood

That said, I still agree with your point. Those guys aren't exclusively signability picks, your 1S and 2nd rounders are still really good prospects regardless. And the 1st round offers more predictability so you want to be sure to go with what you feel is right with that one, even if it makes the later rounds trickier.

I'd go with Appel right now, more sound mechanically than Gray (even with that recoil), stuff doesn't have as high of a ceiling as Gray but I think is more likely to become a top of the rotation guy.

I worry about Bryant defensively and I wonder how he'll adjust once they shorten his stride.

Call it a hunch or Mark Prior scorn, but I'd rather have Gray or Bryant over Appel. I'm going to guess the Cubs would go Gray if they were picking first.

Which one is the guy with black shoes and black socks wearing shorts?

So that's Ian Clarkin, who the Yankees picked.
