Vizcaino Updates??

Does anyone have any information on Vizcaino? I believe he had his surgery before the trading deadline last year which implies some time around 1 year ago. Shouldn't he be pitching by now or at least throwing somewhere? I've checked AZPhil and BA, nothing. Anyone?

I've got nothing either but his surgery was on March 20, 2012, so we're nearly at 14 months.

Since he's on the big league team's 60-day DL, he doesn't need to rehab in Fitch like other injured minor leaguers, so we're more likely to hear something from beat writers than Arizona Phil.

I hope he's at least throwing by now because if he isn't, that's bad news.

I know he was throwing bullpen sessions during Spring Training. Didn't someone say he was traveling with West Tennessee?

I wasn't aware of the bullpen sessions; that is good to hear. I read about him traveling with Tennessee somewhere but I thought that was just a message board poster; I'm hoping for more concrete news.

Arodys Vizcaino, who is on the 60-day disabled list recovering from Tommy John surgery, was in Chicago to be examined by the team doctors. The right-hander, whom the Cubs acquired in July 2012 from the Braves in the Paul Maholm deal, underwent the surgery early in 2012.

That makes it sound like he has had a setback of some sort. Why else would he be seeing the team doctor in Chicago?

He's on the 40 man roster and has never pitched for a Cubs affiliate, so the team doctors are probably the ones with the most familiarity. It could mean he had a set back and is being evaluated for further injuries, or it could also be a checkpoint for him to begin the next phase of his rehab.

@CarrieMuskat Vizcaino in Chicago a checkup or setback?

Nicely done Kyle. Sound like what Raisin said may be right, that this is the next logical step in his recover program.

Carrie Muskat[/url]"]• Arodys Vizcaino, coming back from Tommy John surgery on his right elbow, will continue his rehab with the Cubs, rather than in Mesa, Ariz.

Vizcaino joined the team on Monday. Sveum said the right-hander, acquired from the Braves last July in the Paul Maholm deal, was a couple weeks away from appearing in a game.

Scott Baker, who also is rehabbing from Tommy John surgery one year ago, remained in Mesa at the Cubs' facility.

i know it's been assumed, but did the Cubs ever definitively say they're going to try him as a starter first?

I'm pretty sure they have, although I can't find any quotes. That said, if they use him strictly in the pen this year, it won't surprise me obviously. In fact, I think that may have been a quote from Hoyer at one point, that they want him to be ready to start in 2014.

That was my memory, that they were shooting 2014. Even then he wouldn't be ready for a full season (180-200 innings). If all goes well with his health, and that a big if with him, he might still be limited to 160 or so innings in 2015. Of course, he may not be used as a starter at all.

My hope is he can get stretched out in Iowa starting in early June. Get up to around 50-70 innings of work in by the trading deadline and then be brought up if performance and the Cubs roster situation warrants it. He would likely start in the bullpen with a start or two late in September. He's never pitched more than 97 innings in one season. I doubt they would want to him do too much too soon.

No direct quotes, but they said so on a season ticket holder conference call:

Jed Hoyer explained that they inherited a lot of good things from the previous regime but the pitching they inherited was subpar. Hoyer stressed the importance of the Cubs needing to develop pitching. The Cubs are going to develop Arodys Vizcaino as a starter and not a reliever. Vizcaino needs to work on a third pitch. Epstein said they feel he has a chance to be a very good starting pitcher at the big league level. At worst, Vizcaino is a slam dunk back end of the bullpen reliever.

Guys his age who have missed this much time to injury aren't a slam dunk for anything.

That seemed to read as "if healthy and he doesn't develop a third pitch, he's a slam dunk reliever". No pitcher is "slam dunk" to not be injured. I understand what you are saying, but It'd also be silly for the front office to not speak in best-term scenarios in regards to their prospects.
