that pointdexter only had a career .251 batting average and he hasnt managed anything.

ABTY:

Cubs have asked for permission to speak to Mike Maddux and Dave Magadan of the Rangers... Also have heard the FO has serious interest in Benji Molina and Jose Oquendo of the Cardinals along with Phil Garner (former Astros manager) and Jay Bell of the Pirates...

All that is fine and good however the info that has intrigued me the most is that much like when it was assumed Theo was going to land Josh Byrnes from the Padres because no one thought they would give up their sitting GM instead of a special assistant, I'm hearing that the Padres have a strong interest in Hinch becoming their manager and in fact Bud Black would be the guy the Cubs get... Something to chew on: Byrnes was the GM in Arizona when Hinch was selected as manager...Bud Black was a Towers hire with Hoyer giving him an extension...

Works great with pitchers, tons of experience with youth. He's my top choice.

Who? Black?

I like B2B's bold stance that having smart people involved with your front office is a bad thing.

I never said it would be a bad thing, but so far having the smartest FO hasn't done much to help at the ML level.

Dartmouth, Northwestern, Stanford, plus all of the wonks in the FO. We may not win many games, but we'll lead the league in IQ.

It would be a group that'd eventually win, so long as they don't succumb to groupthink ala Pearl Harbor.

Black included in that table with 2011-2013 data:

Most active in the running game, but effective at least.

Is that at least a bit defensible based on the parks he's managed in and the rosters he's had?

There's definitely noise to the numbers(e.g. a significant chunk of Girardi's running game volume and success is having Gardner and Ichiro). Black has a similar arrangement with Maybin, Cabrera, and Venable providing a huge chunk of the running game, but that discretion is part of being a good manager, too. I don't look at those numbers and think "Black runs too much"(especially given the success rate), but we can infer that he's not a station to station guy either, especially given the potential Hit and Run total.

Really good appearance just now by Keith Law on Waddle and Silvy.

Don't really have time to sum it up but look for it on their podcast if you missed it. Actually, you might be able to just rewind to it on the ESPN Chicago radio stream. Started at 3:00.

Can they afford to get in a bidding war? If they can I don't want to hear jack [expletive] about poverty. They can find it when they have to.

Sorry David. Just saw this. But yeah, Black is who I prefer, didn't know he runs as much as he does, but maybe that's based on what he's had to work with.

He also doled out a lot of playing time to Alexi Amarista...which... I mean I know their team sucks but... come on

Kotsay also somehow got 171 PA lol

I love W&S, but those two are brutal when it comes to baseball.

True. My honest guess is we can find warts with anyone, probably even Maddon. Without looking at anything, my impression of Black is he's developed a fair amount of position players, has plenty of success stories with starting pitching, and has great success inventing bullpens. I'll look this stuff up when I'm finished with my meeting. I'm probably way off.
