bigots standing behind their religious mumbo jumbo

he hates pre marital sex but writes about the NBA. Must be a masochist, which I think might be against the teachings the bible.

Haha, exactly. It's funny that Broussard seems to have no problem with Kobe, Dwight, Lebron, and all the many other NBA stars who are adulterers or have pre-marital sex. But dude goes to great lengths to show his disgust over an openly gay NBA athlete.

ETA: The Deadspin comments are hilarious.

Ever since sulley pointed out that Chris Broussard says "DWIIIIIGHT" and "LEBRAAAHN" in a really annoying way I haven't been able to take anything he says seriously.

The reaction to the story means it is a big story, by definition, so the notion that one "doesn't feel like it is a big story" just does not hold up to any thought. You may not personally care about it, but it is a big story.

Mike Franseca is apparently doing the same thing on his radio show. The guy will talk about television rating of random games and the minutia of freaking horse racing and almost anything else, yet he tries to pretend this isn't a story worth talking about. That's pretty much just a way for him to try and hide his inner bigot.

If you are willing to talk about the stories surrounding sports, and not just the x's/o's and box scores, then this is a story.

Valid point and I appreciate your engagement in a mature discussion. I do feel that ESPN and other news outlets are a hype machine and unfortunately this is going to be the next big thing. I feel like some of the reality of the situation, homosexuals coming out in sports is going to be lost on Mr. Collins. He will be out of a job next season and soon, retired. It will be shocking if a GM is willing to add him to their team and if that does happen, will be a true story.

Ironically enough (probably not irony) ESPN has kind of ignored the story since it was their competitor that broke it, and ESPN is all about hyping ESPN branded stories, not the actual news.

Not knowing anything about this player or his ability I do think it would be shocking to some extent if somebody signs him. That is all the more reason not to question his motives and timing.

He's got nothing to lose and I would bet make more money with publicity, appearances and a book deal then signing a minimum deal if he's even offered one. I personally don't care what his sexual orientation is as long as he's not bothering anybody. It does suck that we'll for the time being not see what the full impact of his announcement would be in the world of the 4 major sports.

What do you mean bothering anybody? Like, as long as he's not writing a book about his life (something millions of others have done)? Or as long as he's not hitting on straight guys on the street? Or as long as he's not making little old ladies fret while heading to church?

Bothering is an odd choice of word there.

Maybe cubbyvirus is regularly approached by gay men and he's tired of it!

Perhaps I should have worded it in a more PC way. As long as he's an honest law abiding citizen. That is what I was getting at.

It's got nothing to do with PC, bother is an odd choice. And so is "honest", not to mention "law abiding". You know there are laws against things like gay people having sex, if he breaks those laws do you now care? If he lies about something all of a sudden his sexual orientation matters?

I don't feel like this will make that big of a difference to the actual teams or locker rooms. I feel like this is a bigger media issue than it is an actual issue. Maybe I am underestimating the internal reaction.

I wonder whether teammates know a player is gay, but just don't speak publicly about it. I go to school with Magic Johnson's son, who knows Steph Curry and says he has sexual encounters with the same man every time he visits the city. How many of the players on the Warriors know Curry is gay? I'd be willing to bet some of them do, but they aren't (or at least don't seem to be) freaking out about it. If a player's friend knows, wouldn't some of his teammates know?

I just feel like there has to be more awareness inside the locker room, they just aren't public about it.

If he's a giant [expletive] about his beliefs and way of life, then I have a problem with the way he's conducting his business. That goes for gays, heteros, religious and agnostic people. There is quite a list of prominent individuals who conduct their business in that way. Nobody enjoys Al Sharpton or Jessie Jackson getting TV attention and being preachy with people. That would be the perfect example of what I'm getting at.

So you don't mind that he is gay you just don't want him to let other people know he is gay?

Metta World Peace's take on the Jason Collins coming out story:

Whether it's a free country or not, you should be free to act as you want to do as long as it's not violent. No matter what it is. I came here in a Cookie Monster shirt because I wanted to, and I was going to wear the pants. But I thought you guys were going to judge me. I was going to wear the hat too. But I thought you guys would judge me. I didn't want Mitch [Kupchak] to judge me. So that's why I didn't wear the hats and the pants. But I should've wore it. You should be free to do and act how you want to act.

I dont care that he's gay or that he's come out. I compare his coming out however to the other myriad of retired players coming out. This man will not be in the NBA next season. I also don't think he should be celebrated either.

It is different from a guy who is in the middle of his career. But it is also quite different from a guy who is officially retired and years past his playing time.

Or, as Drew Magary wrote:

http://deadspin.com/why-does-it-matter-if-jason-collins-is-a-bad-pro-bask-484587396

Turning men's professional sports into a gay-tolerant environment was never going to be an overnight process. As much as folks in BIG SPORTS JOURNALISM were hoping for a superstar player to be the first to come out as openly gay, it wasn't ever going to happen that way. This is a process that was barely underway even in 1999, when former MLB outfielder Billy Bean came out. Like Collins, Bean was a journeyman with a middling career.

This is what the next step in sports' acceptance process had to be. It had to go from former player to a small-time active player, even one perhaps on the verge of being a former player. Everyone is clamoring for a superstar's eventual announcement, but change happens incrementally, and it begins on the margins. Collins is the link in the chain, the one who brings open homosexuality much closer to the locker room than it ever has been. He's the one that will make other gay, closeted athletes feel less alone in the world.

By the way, thanks for engaging in such a mature discussion.

why not?

Because he likely won't play another NBA game in his career and wouldn't really be the first openly gay athlete in history to play in a major sport? That's unless we're counting the past 8 or so years as him playing which wouldn't be accurate. I'll take back that statement if he goes on to play in the NBA.

why do you keep saying this?

So pro athletes should only be "celebrated" for coming out publicly if they're actively playing? You don't think it can have any kind of positive impact if it happens at the end of their career or after they've retired?

Maybe celebrate isn't quite the word, but yes applaud him.

It's like Kyle and touchdown reviews; he's just sitting there on the edge of his seat waiting for the OK to celebrate.
