. I also don't think he should be celebrated either.

why not?

Because he likely won't play another NBA game in his career and wouldn't really be the first openly gay athlete in history to play in a major sport? That's unless we're counting the past 8 or so years as him playing which wouldn't be accurate. I'll take back that statement if he goes on to play in the NBA.

So if he does happen to play next season you feel it will be okay to celebrate him?

It's like Kyle and touchdown reviews; he's just sitting there on the edge of his seat waiting for the OK to celebrate.

why even bother standing up

Maybe celebrate isn't quite the word, but yes applaud him.

But what he's doing now isn't a positive thing unless he plays again? Nevermind he's a pro athlete and a black man, the type of public figure that rarely comes out as gay; no, that can't serve as any kind of positive message or influence or anything unless he's playing next year.

It's a slight misrepresentation to label him as the first athlete to ever come out as gay if he never plays another minute of basketball again. Is it not?

How do you figure? Your past as a pro athlete isn't erased when you retire.

If so, then Collins wouldn't be the first. Others have come out post-career as gay.

He just finished a season and is not retired. He would probably be listed as an active free agent, so I'm not so sure what the hangup is in the description. I do not believe he announced intentions to leave the game in his article. Somebody might not sign him, but just like Kyle Long going early in the draft all it takes is one GM to want you on the team. You don't need a bidding war.

Who here has said he was the first pro athlete to come out?

also, i don't know whether he will play next year or not now, but he absolutely would have before the SI story

I don't think that's fair. I think Collins will wind up at the end of somebody's bench next year, but he's certainly not a no-doubter for a roster. He's a 7 foot defensive body, but today's NBA has less and less need for that.

Isn't that why he's on the front page of every media outlets website? If he never plays again then this is a non story

No and no. It's because he's the first technically active player in the four major US sports to come out. And you're trying really, really hard to dismiss this.

Well, the reaction here was dumber than expected. At least it was the people I kinda figured it would be.

I misread your exchange with Wilson. My point is him being active is a technicality. He's being passed off as the FIRST NBA player to come out. He's on the street jobless right now, yet the press is hyping this up to be more then it really is. I don't get the hype as its been done before without the technicality. Yes he's not technically retired, but he also isn't representing a NBA team. The writing is on the wall. Hes 34, 7 foot and only worth 6 fouls. When a GM decides to stick his neck out and sign him, then as I said before that is worthy news of the hype machine. Otherwise it's going to look mighty strange when after all this he decides to retire willfully or forcefully.

What? No he's not; John Amaechi was the first to come out in 2007.

It's a big deal whether he plays another second in the NBA or not.

Collins Comes Out

Jason Collins became the first player in a major American sport to announce that he is gay.

This is the ESPN headline. So then you're saying he's not the first NBA player to come out?

Of course he isn't. Amaechi was retired when he announced that he was gay. There have also been NFL and MLB players who have come out (or it was revealed) after their playing days were over. Collins is the first active player to come out as gay, hence "IN a major American sport."

On Monday, Sacramento overcame those long odds when an NBA ownership committee studying the situation unanimously voted against relocating the Kings. A formal vote of all 30 owners is scheduled for May 13 but sources told ESPN.com the full body is expected to ratify the recommendation of the 12 owners from the relocation and finance committees.

Suck it, Seattle.

if i'd had to guess which of the four major sports would have an active athlete come out first, i probably would have guessed hockey. pretty sure basketball would've been my last guess, due to the smaller roster size and high numbers of black american athletes.
