Retired NBA coach Phil Jackson sounded off on the possibility of professional gay male athletes in a new interview with HuffPost Live.

Jackson, who served as head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers and the Chicago Bulls, said he'd "never run into" a gay professional basketball player throughout his career.

When asked if the organizations needed to be more inclusive towards gay players, the 11-time NBA champion coach called the question "ridiculous," before noting, "There's no inclusiveness to be had."

Yeah, it's definitely vague. Phil never coached the guy that I can tell, so it's certainly not something that is disproven or anything.

Female pro athletes (WNBA) who have come out as gay have not counted?

Not in the "big four pro sports" discussion. But gay female athletes has been something out in the open for quite some time.

It'll be interesting to see if that prompts other athletes to come out.

With this and the NFL story, it's clear more are on the way to coming out. =D>

You mean Ayenbadejo saying that there's 4 that are going to come out?

Yep, I think it is awesome.

He backed off that story.

He needs to shut up and let whoever wants to come out come out when they want to. He seems to be almost pressuring them.

Not in terms of being part of the big 4 sports. He's the first one to do that (along with being a male) and, well, very few people really care about the WNBA and I think it's fair to say the general public already thinks/accepts a portion of WNBA players are gay.

good for collins. i never heard of him until today, and now i've learned his backup in high school was jason segal, and he was friends with chelsea clinton at stanford.

I forgot he existed until today. I think it's great, but lack of production could easily be cited for him not appearing in the NBA again rather than any sort of blackball. One of these leagues needs a young superstar to come out.

I don't think it needs to be a superstar, just a good player still in his prime. Marginal players at the end of their career are typically brought in to fill a hole and be a quiet professional. Even non-bigoted coaches/GMs could avoid such a player simply for the "don't want the distraction" angle.

and yes I giggled a little as I wrote "fill a hole" in a story about gay players.

I am awful.
