Article in ESPN the Magazine about Lucroy's voodoo pitch framing has a segment about about Montero and 4 other Cubs catchers doing pitch-framing drills in Spring Training while Maddon watches them. They have pitching machines setup to shoot baseballs at the edge of the zone. Theo mentions that maybe they can reverse engineer-it.

I think he will start with the big league team.

Having said that, I think if they were to send Javy down for a couple of weeks and let him beat up some AAA pitchers with KB and called them both up at the same time it could take some pressure off of Javy.

I like that idea.

Baseball Reference says he has 55 days of service time from last season. 172 is a full season, right? Not sure if him starting at AAA would move back arbitration/avoid super two...

I don't think there's a motivation behind that from the team necessarily, but possible effect of him being down if he struggles in AAA.

I'm guessing he does not make the team. He's been bad for quite awhile now and hasn't shown much this spring. I've only watched a few games and it does seem like he's trying to be more patient by taking pitches but that's not the same as pitch recognition. He takes pitches right down the middle and swings at ones in his eyes or that bounce 2 feet in front of the plate. Seems like he's guessing (badly). I'd send him down and wait for some sustained success.

He's never really had a problem working the count. Last season it seemed like he saw plenty of pitches but the result was usually the same long or short count.

They now project Bryant to hit 60 home runs.

Decided to watch Enemy of the State today... How did I not realize that Joe Maddon and Gene Hackman are doppelganger?

Gene Hackman did retire from acting just before Maddon became a manager...

Rosenthal - who I'm normally fairly OK with - has a piece out arguing why the union should file a grievance if Bryant is sent down. This just irritates me to no end - why should the Cubs be held to a higher standard than every other club has been? I normally take the union's side against MLB owners because in a battle of greedy bastards, the owners are greedier and bastard-ier. But the union agreed to the CBA. It's the deal. It's stupid, but it is what it is. The Cubs would have to be crazy not to delay Bryant's clock for a year over a mere 12 days.

Why should the union, Rosenthal, or anyone who isn't a Cubs fan or employee care about what's fair to the Cubs?

Technically, what the Cubs are doing is against the CBA. It's just never been enforced because violations are essentially impossible to prove.

He's not really against the Cubs, though. The article does include this:

Make no mistake: If I were Epstein, I would handle this exactly the same way, particularly knowing that Bryant’s agent, Scott Boras, generally prefers his clients to establish their values on the open market rather than accept long-term extensions.

He is just taking an issue with the practice as a whole and using the Cubs to frame the issue. Bryant is just the best example writers have had for a while.

The union shouldn't. Rosenthal should. He should know better. He's essentially arguing that the Cubs be held to one standard and every other club another.

The rule is stupid - Ken is correct. It needs to be taken out in the next CBA. But the place to fight the battle is when that's negotiated, not by filing a nuisance grievance over Bryant.

Almost a year to the day there were news items about how there might be a grievance over Springer's service time. The Astros even made it worse in typical Astros fashion by offering him an extension right after they sent him down. Nothing came of it.

On a more fun note, how fun is that call up day going to be? Almost better than Opening Day.

And then we get to do it all over again with Addison.

Speaking of dumb stuff being thrown at the Cubs - do you guys think they'll ever actually bother to resolve that silly tampering investigation?

Kyle Schwarber's favorite hitter growing up was Joey Votto. His favorite catcher was Yadier Molina.

Let that [expletive] simmer for a little bit.

How would you propose that the rule be changed? Serious question.

Just look at it like they're going to inspire him to end up being an unholy combination of the two, and we will rejoice.
